Installed game version is invalid or incomplete

So I've got the retail boxed version of the game, and installed it fine. Once it installed the launcher started up and told me the memory etc of my PC and said the configuartor capability (or something like that) was PC_High so I figure all systems go.......I was wrong.

It then downloads the patcher_ROW which as far as I can see is the correct one but when it tries to install it immediately says 'shutting down' and gives the error message 'Installed game version is invalid or incomplete'. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with administrator priviliges and tried downloading and installing the patcher manually and tried deleting troll.dzip first etc etc but every single time I get this error and after 2 days I still haven't managed to play this game!

Is there any way to play without patching or does anyone know how to actually fix this issue?

Have you tried manually downloading and installing the most recent patch from here? Also, this is relevant: number eight on the list

Yep used the 0->1.3 patcher but to no avail, I still get the 'Installed game version is invalid or incomplete' message. Also tried the stuff in the pinned FAQ thread but that didnt work either.

Seriously considering just returning the game to the store and getting my money back

( get the patches first :D )

How to patch the game manually:
*disconnect internet connection
*install game
*close the key/updater
*install Patch 0 ( http://www.gamepron.com/file/5853/The-Witcher-2-Assassins-of-Kings---New-Install-Patcher-Western-EU/ )
*install Patch 1.1 ( http://www.gamepron.com/file/5835/The-Witcher-2-Assassins-of-Kings-Patch-1.1-International/ )
*install Patch 1.2 ( http://www.gamepron.com/file/6218/The-Witcher-2-Assassins-of-Kings-v1.1-to-v1.2-Patch/ )
*install Patch 1.3 ( http://www.gamepron.com/file/8131/The-Witcher-2-Assassins-of-Kings-Patch-1.2-to-1.3/ )
*play test
*reconnect internet connection :p

I also wanted to add the advice to double-check your system for overclocks in any area--PCIe bus, gpu, cpu, ram, etc., and make darn sure that your whole system is clocked to *defaults* before attempting to install the game. I don't know how many cases (a lot!) of program install difficulties I've seen that were caused by overclocked conditions that caused an error when writing to hard disk from ram across an overclocked bus! It happens all the time--*especially* if you are one of those people who has said, "I've been overclocking for years and never had a problem!" That's irrelevant. Every game is different and will react to overclocked machine conditions differently. Some can tolerate them just fine--others crash. It's just a fact of life relative to overclocking anything.

What makes me think this might be your case is the fact that there is no reason the 1.0-1.3 patch should fail to properly install. There's an error taking place somewhere, so you want to make sure and eliminate the possible problem of an overclock causing those errors. This is the first thing people should check out whenever they have problems with installing programs, or encounter programs that are already installed but suddenly and inexplicably don't want to run anymore. I've been amazed at the number of people who swore up & down that they weren't overclocking anything, but were shocked to discover the overclocking they'd set up in their bios and just forgotten about! Not good...;) Check it out.

Also, you might want to check out your installed versions of Microsoft Visual C++ runtime as installed in in your OS by opening up Programs & Features (win7). Lots of people make the mistake of uninstalling every version of this except the most recent--thinking that programs will automatically default to the most recent versions. Nope--programs that are installed call for specific versions and will not run if those versions are not installed. In fact, the resulting error message caused by this conditions is 'Installed game version is invalid or incomplete'. So definitely take a look-see at that. I have no less than 16 versions of MV C++ installed in my system, both x86 and x64 versions (I have an x64 system) and every one of those version installs was put there by a program that *expects* that version to be present else the program won't run and will generate an error message similar to what you report.

Good luck! A good rule of thumb is to realize that most of the time, if not all the time, if you are having an error that very few other people are having with a program--it is most likely because of something not functioning correctly inside your individual system. OTOH, if lots of people are reporting the same problem across a wide swath of hardware then most likely the condition is caused by a game bug that the developer must fix. In this case, I think far more people are successfully able to install the patch than are not, and so it is likely that those who can't have local system problems that they need to address.
