Interviews and Articles Part 2

They've been dodgy about that question (har, har), saying in many interviews that roll is replace by pirouette. So this is the first solid confirmation that roll is indeed in. I wonder why we haven't we seen it in gameplay?

Actually we have seen it, which is why it was strange that in some interviews they were saying the roll was "replaced"... I guess it's all in the interpretation, replaced doesn't necessarily mean removed, I know I too thought it was removed for awhile there.

Edit: I like the fact that the roll stayed in, simply because if you want to quickly maneuver forwards, a roll makes the most sense. I guess you could still Pirouette, but it doesn't "flow" as well as a roll does in a direct forward motion.
However I really hope that on M+K we aren't forced to hold a button down to do it, there's enough bloody keys on my keyboard that it really should have a separate button.

Hold might be there to discourage rolling as the most efficient mode of the on foot movement:huh:

That's actually the same maneuver he does in TW2, a fast attack where he rolls and stabs with one key press. It's not an evasive roll. In all the demos so far, he doesn't dodge roll once.

-edit

Hmm true, but he also does that Roll > Igni in the Debut Gameplay Trailer, it looked like the exact same roll animation and you can't automatically tag on a Sign to a Roll (Although for the purposes of a Trailer I guess it could have been made possible).

Guess I was wrong at the time, but looks like my stupidity was correct anyway. I've just always been under the assumption since E3 that the roll was still there, but it either activated automatically based on the context or there was going to be a separate button for it.

That thought did come to my mind, having to hold the button means you can't spam it, but I still don't like the idea of using a keyboard and having to hold a button down for a function that should be instant, like an evasive maneuver. It's also why I very, very rarely went into slo-mo mode when throwing Bombs in TW2 and why I was personally not a fan of those special moves in TW1 where you had to hold down a button.

Anyway with all the other pirouette and back/side-step options available in TW3 I don't see why they'd be worried the roll being "overpowered" or people wanting to spam it, I know I don't. I can only assume (for now) that it's on a hold function because of limited buttons on a Gamepad.

I guess it's distance dependant, IIRC the old infodump said that rolling was used more(by whoever played the game to showcase it) when fighting big monsters, which I believe was the ice giant in this case since that's what they were showing off at the time.

So maybe the distance covered by rolling and pirouette are different?

So, what you are saying is.... they will add fur/hairworks to my xboxone version of the game 3 years later?
What, with a free dlc patch? Fuck That, I'm going to save up for a PC now! lol....
No, that most likely won't happen. I mean the tech itself will be available to consoles later right now it only exists on PC as you can see in that picture.

I assumed this was the case all along, naturally if you're going to have different evasion moves they have to serve a specific purpose, and rolling can cover more distance compared to other animations while remaining acceptably realistic.

Whats also possible, though doubtful, is that because of their concept, the short dodge moves are made to avoid vertical-ish attacks, while the roll saves you even from an horizontal one, but I dont think they actually made this in any way, so that leaves us with moves that must differ in range, if not in the dimension of attacks they can dodge. Possibly speed of execution is another factor, as well as vigor consumption and ability to counterattack.

Damn it. Don't use X, A for sprint because then you cant ajust the camera while running since your right thumb will be occupied. Its the same small issue i have with gta and rdr.
And yess, i was hoping u can both dodge and roll. Although I wonder how they are gonna balance it. Maybe each one has a specific purpose. For example dodging is faster and rolling is more effective for evading more wide area attacks but slower maybe .

So, in these preview events, can the press change the graphical settings on the pc version? If not will they be equivalent to what ultra settings might look like? or is it on specific settings to match the consoles graphical fidelity?
Im thinking of building my first gaming pc and I want to see what the pc version on max settings looks like compare to consoles. Also why the fur tech won't be enabled in the preview buld? I want to see the exclusive pc features in action. Can't wait till the embargo lifts up.

Disclaimer: Pure speculation except the first nine words

The press isn't given the whole game to play, it's only a section, a demo essentially I guess? So if that's the case then it's a cutoff section that they've 'cooked' and I guess they chose moderate settings that they tested and performed satisfactorily on their hands on machines' bruteforce power since optimizations are still underway for the main game.

I think the camera will be smart like RDR, I never had a problem with the camera in that game.
I think it will look and feel perfect, but that's just me.
;)

Probably because hair/fur tech and other nvidia stuff require GTX 980 IN SLI or even more and they didnt have good enough PCs prepared, haha xD

or just single one, but it is demanding on every card
