When I bought the game I thought it was the best thing I've played in God knows how long. After a week though, I thought about playing it and just felt that I couldn't be bothered any more. I reckon it's something to do with the controls. I've bumped into countless things and everything is so finicky, Roach constantly just starts running off the road when I'm holding nothing but X so that mechanic is practically broken, the dotted line that shows how to get to your next objective goes everywhere and is hilariously inconsistent. It's like trying to find your way around using a bad sat nav. I have around 10 quests that I'm just too low level to do, so that means they're doing nothing but clogging up my quest log, not to mention levelling is slow and tedious and the inventory screen frequently lags a bit and is cumbersome to say the least. I was wowed by this game when I first played but it seems it has quite a lot of frustrating flaws.

Thoughts?

Sad to say, but I'm agreeing with this. I don't really care about the minimap navigation or have a problem leveling, however. I actually think the game would be a lot more fun and engaging without GPS, which has unfortunately become a staple in games. If you actually had to follow clues, or directions (i.e. NESW - compass), or just wander to find objectives, gear, locations, etc. would be awesome. Games are always appealing to the lowest common denominator, so we're left with something that's essentially on rails/linear, however hard they try to disguise it. Also, the combat system is far too simplistic/boring/easy, especially when you consider that all weapons attack the same way (I think), regardless of whether it's a club, axe, or sword. CDPR could learn a lot from Dark Souls.

I'm waiting for patch to be relased and starting the game all over again on Death March. In the meantime I started Witcher 2 which I never played before and well if you ask me game mechanics there are totally fu*** up, I wish that story will make up for that.

story in witcher 1 and 2 make up for controls a lot.

I just started, so I don't feel bored, but can see me becoming if I would play too much. I do agree with you on control/movement though. It's, imo, one of the worst I've seen recently in a game. The number of times I had to turn back, then forward, then step back, then forward, just to get a focus on an item, is mind boggling.

Well, I'll premise that I already finished the game playing on Death march, I'm (mostly) incredible impressed with what I played and I'm far enough from being bored by it that I started a new campaign immediately after.

That said...

This is my main gripe with the core design of this game, beside the poorly developed/balanced itemization.

I genuinely think that, while that kind of hand-holding is probably a necessary evil in the modern game market (yep, that's how it is, guys: if you want to break into mainstream you need to design games for people who don't actually like to play them) they should address the problem in future DLCs and expansions trying to design questlines that are play-tested to be solved without any form of tracker/marker.

Quests should:
- give you the required hints, but let you figure out things on your own without driving you by the nose and drawing all the conclusions for you.
- give you enough information and geographical references to reach goals without necessarily follow a tracker.
- summarize these info on the journal, without just putting a yellow marker on the map and barely telling you "reach this point".

I'm not bored at all. As time has gone on I've deliberately slowed down my progress by reducing my use of sign-posts significantly, turning off the mini-map and the quest tracker, and upped the difficultly. I don't use sprint with Roach at all anymore and more often just trott. I find the world very beautiful and are appreciating it more and more from the slower pace, and from not having the mini-map to glance at. Very early on in the game I turned off the icons on the main map that show you the locations of the places of interest which is probably the best tweak for my enjoyment: when I have a quest marker on the main map I have a general bearing of where I need to go, but I pick routes through areas I haven't been to yet, and not having any markers on the map means I never know what I'll find on the way. I can spend a whole evening accomplishing very little in terms of quest completion, but having a really fun and immersive adventure. I hear more sounds now too - I heard a cuckoo the other day and found myself trying to spot it! For me it's about having an adventure rather than playing a game - the game is just the medium.

I like adventure game, enough to be trying to making one myself, but people have o realise that Witcher is is not a sherlock holmes game. Not everyone wanted to play the game like a traditional adventure game.

I can see that they can make a separate difficulty settings for quests (non combat part), but they probably consider it too much development effort to cater the design for 2 crowds. Maybe enhance edition?

Actually, yes and no. Not necessarily bored, but the game feels a bit more bland now, because I'm holding up progressing with the main story, since I assume I'm before the very end. Right now, I'm doing side stuff in No Man's Land and Novigrad, and the game somehow feels...empty. After I've completed the main quests in those areas, I don't really feel like doing side quests so I kinda force myself. The fact that I'm way too overleveled for most of those quests doesn't help. I guess I should've do everything in Velen before moving on to Skellige. That's what I'll do for my next walkthrough.

Skellige is not the end of the game, if it's your first time there, not even remotely. And if it is your second time there ... just continue the story, you can always come back to the side missions after the main story is over ... or start another playthrough - which is probably what I'm going to do. On a second playthrough you can try another build and make different decisions in a lot of the quests, so you'll see different outcomes. It is silly to prolong the game at the cost of fun - that makes no sense whatsoever. If you are not having fun doing the side stuff, do the main mission - there is no reason you have to force yourself do to the side missions at the cost of enjoyment. I have had around 100 hours of fun in the game thus far and that is more than my price of admission (less than $1 per hour) so I'd say I got my money's worth. And if this is not your second trip into Skellige then you are not even remotely close to the end.

Anyone ever thought of doing a speedrun ? I wonder how long it will actually take. 25 hours is the initial time record.

I only found speedrun preview on youtube, it took him 11 minutes from start to vizima.

That's funny, I haven't stolen anything from anyone, so I don't have this problem.

What are they going to do, argue with the white haired brute with the two well used swords on his back? If you steal from open areas with guards in them there is a good chance the guards will notice and take umbrage at your theft, actually. I remember stealing from a town after I'd recently saved the area from monsters and the locals had just returned, then I tried to loot a crate and the guards beat me senseless for the crime and took a good chunk of my gold. So it depends on where you're committing the crime.

Nope, not bored in the least and no issues with controls after the first couple of hours to get used to things.
