Roach is female. She's always female. And if you have any doubts, stand somewhere where the camera allows you to see what's missing...
And the Roche/Roach thing only works in English. Roach is named after a breed of fish, and there's no name similarity in other languages.

IMO Roach name is not goes with witcher personality or even with his name Geralt.
As for the name, the series' creator, the author Andrzej Sapkowski, chose it in Polish, where it's Płotka, which is a diminutive female name for a variety of European freshwater fish in the carp family (Rutilus rutilus) (http://www.britannica.com/animal/roach-fish). CD Projekt RED has simply carried on the tradition. Roach is the approximate English name for the same fish. In some other languages, the name is translated based upon whichever word -- no matter how odd it may appear -- is used for that type of fish. (It's a bit closer in German, where the name is Plötze.) However, to my knowledge, to this day, not many people know precisely why the horse is named after a small carp.
Etymologically, the English word 'Roach' (the fish, not the insect) is derived from Old French roche, however, the ultimate meaning of this word, and it's origin, remain obscure. So, in a way, upon these grounds, the name could be considered a bastardisation of Roche's name, but that still doesn't get us anywhere.

Well, actually, the title has now been changed, by special action of the Blue Guards, to reflect the proper gender of Roach. But, the question still stands: where are we hoping to go with this thread?
Well, that depends on who is in control. If you let Geralt drive, I suspect that the answer to that is round and round in circles, pausing for a snack at the nearest pile of hay, and then stopping half-way down a ravine. On the other hand, if you let Roach go her own way, down the nearest road, regardless of the direction.

Geralt since ever is naming all his horses Roach (polish: Plotka) This is also mentioned in the game.
