Is smoking actually all that bad in game?

I think that smoking, in art, whether it be cinema or video games, is used to confer many things about a character without using words; impulsivity, and a sort of nihilism, is what I usually draw from it. It the real world, people smoke, especially in the underworld, which CP2077 is concerned with.
Your comment about Syn-Lungs is very true, I imagine that if such implants were commonplace in our world, smoking rates would quickly rise to levels similar to what were seen in the 50s.

I probably need to see The Informer again for a refresher course on the way smoking impacts the body and brain (great movie to watch alongside Thank You For Smoking, lol)

It’s just a game. I don’t smoke in my real life. My Nomad FemV, might smoke in Japantown apt, role playing. But seems V loves that 🍺🫣
Panam doesn’t smoke
& she’s crazy stress. Strong willed character aside V.
I’ve never played a Nomad. I’ve played others, Corpo was great but never have I felt good in heart with a smile as Nomad. I was able to convince Anna Hill to leave NC, her state of mind scared me. Told her you would have family..*etc* and saw her smiling and talked to her, otherwise she would have died in NC, no matter how pretty you paint NC, the reality of a mess is stenchy!! gig from Regina.

Judy will only smoke if you(V) give her a cig when she asks for one. This is because she quit. So, if you see Judy smoking, its your fault for getting her started again.

I'll admit it's been awhile, since I played, but I believe you have to give her a cig. I don't think there is a choice there.

There is a choice.

Note: just did some more research and a found clip with no choice which is odd because I have a distinct memory of not doing so in one playthru. Hence the comment.

Yep, no choice... You can try to dissuade her, but at the end, you have to give her a cig (she's old enough to do what she want^^) :giggle:
(it's like that since release, so "bad" memories I guess)

People get kind of snooty about Judy’s smoking but in a world of cyber ware replacements (including lungs) is it really such a bad thing?
One can imagine whatever about the kind of future there is in 2077. NC can't keep its streets clean, so who cares about the lungs. But If you're the kind of player that don't like that, and want to romance Judy, it would be cool to be able to tell her you don't like it.

But even worse, I had never seen V smoke until a gig in dog city (phantom liberty) where after a waiting period, we come back to V tossing a cig. That was totally unnecessary. That is something I find disgusting and made me stop my game session on the spot. Actually the only reason I registered to these forums is to complain to CD project red about that.

Even if you have a choice once you've tried refusing you end up having no choice. A RPG is supposed to be about choices, so that's fucked up IMHO.

I've tried all the dialogue options, but you always end up without a choice

I don't think it would rise that much again, because smokers aren't that concerned about their health; and for many non smokers it just stinks so badly that going to places where smoking is allowed is a no.
Also, smoking is indeed so 50's, so using that as a form of art for the future is just lazy IMHO.

As reminder, Cyberpunk 2077 come from Cyberpunk (2013) from Mike Pondsmith, created in 1988... Smoking was “still trendy” at this time. It wasn't chocking to see celebrities smoking on TV for example ;)

To all the moderators, feel free to remove my text if you guys think it doesn't belong on this forum.

To understand if smoking is unhealthy in Cyberpunk, we first need to know what smoking exactly does. So, let's say the cigarettes are the exactly the same as in our lifes, will smoking be healthy with for example Cyberkentics lungs.

It depends, let me explain why.

Everyone thinks Nicotine is a dangerous substance, which it is but not the most dangerous substance in a cigarette.

First of all, the avarage heat of a Cigarette is 650° c with a single puff, it can be higher or lower, but average is 650° c. That hot air will be inhaled, which goes in your mouth, throat and eventually to your lungs. In my education, they thought me 2 parts of a human body where you can't have absolutely no burning damage. That's your groin, and your lungs. So, people have a heat source that can go up to 900° c close to their mouth, while lungs is the most vulnerable part for burn damage.

Let's go to the next subject, the most dangerous part of smoking.

The air in Cyberpunk that people breath in, will be probarly even more worse as our own air. The air that we breath in and in Cyberpunk contains different substances, one of those substances is Polonium. Polonium is a radioactive substance, but it's only in low dosis in the air, which doesn't harm a human body. But a tobacco plant pulls those substances towards itself and holds it, which creates higher amount of dosis. Smoking contains Polonium-210 and Lead-210 in higher dosis. And what it does is slowly changing your DNA, which can create different diseases.

So, this leads to the question "is smoking bad in Cyberpunk". First off all, you need to have eletronics and Cyberkentics that is resistance to a X amount of heat. Then you need to have Cyberkentics that filters out Polonium 210 and Lead 210, but even if it does, its still in your body. How can you get rid of those substances in your body? So, you also need to have lungs with a exhaust pipe to remove all the unnecessary smokes and substances.

But nicotine still needs to get to their brains, otherwise the whole "feeling" of a cigarette will be gone, so it would be pointless to smoke then. So, to answer your question. I think personally that smoking is still bad in Cyberpunk 2077, even though they have Cyberkenitcs and artificial lungs.

But yet, I want to argue a little bit against it.

From a other point of view, in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, people have eletronics inside their bodies, the whole city is covered with lights, the amount of electronics is way higher as what we have. It could be that humans in Cyberpunk 2077 have a higher resistance to radioactive materials.

Is it ok for a character to smoke while you stand there dripping in blood and giblets, picking gore from your car's grille? :ROFLMAO:

Not like you expect to live to a ripe old age where you have to deal with the long term consequences of smoking. I would expect many smoke in game. It is fine and appropriate in game and fits-with/adds-to the dystopian nihilistic atmosphere of cyberpunk

As a non smoker I really would have liked if they had made the whole game without any trace of smoking, period. It does not "add to the atmosphere" or anything, it's just nasty and dumb. Last century's misguided "coolness" doesn't belong in 2023 or 2077.
I don't mind Johnny smoking or that one scene with Judy. What really bothers me is that my char can say she doesn't smoke but still gets overflowing ashtrays in her apartments. Seriously. Why can you roleplay and make a girl with a penis and a male voice in this game if that's your thing, but can't make a girl without cigarette butts and ashtrays in her living space?!?
