I played both TW1 and TW2 an incalculable amount of time. They are great games and the only thing that really matters is your passion towards them. Focusing only on the graphics seems a shallow POV...

I've played through Witcher 1 about five times since I bought it six years back. I never tire of it. Does that answer suffice? If I hadn't had so many new games waiting to be played there would have been a sixth playthrough before Witcher 3 launch.

I honestly am still partial to TW1 over TW2. Of course, this board naturally attracts people who are the most invested in the series, and that often (but not always!) means they are fans of the first game, but I definitely think the criticisms over the first game's combat are overblown, and (though many seem to disagree with this view), actually prefer TW1's story and chapter pacing. I think the Outskirts of Vizima were a much stronger opening to TW1 than Flotsam was to TW2 - though many seem to think the Outskirts are actually the weakest part of TW1.

So, I would say that anyone should definitely play TW1. It's a rare gem of an RPG and one of the best games released in the past decade, as far as I'm concerned.

Hear hear. Completely agreed.

I'm actually playing through The Witcher 1 at the moment and just arrived at Murky Waters.

It's been a while since I've played the game and I'm (again) just blown away by how beautiful this chapter is. In fact, I'm not sure if there is any place in The Witcher 2 that's even close to this beautiful and atmospheric. Or in any other games I've played..

Agreed. I played a lot of times, but the first Act is my favourite of all. But you can find something to love in every chapter though.

You can love or hate the combat system, but I think you cannot argue the fact that this game is looks like an oil painting. I think this game don't even need a remastered edition, sure thing I would like to see the game with the new engine, but I think it is not needed yet.

I'm actually there now (first time player) and agree completely that it's probably the best looking place so far. This is my frist time playing the Witcher as I've had it for ages (purchased 2010) but only played the prologue. With Wild Hunt coming out, I'm determined to get through this and AoK.

I have to admit when I first played the game the mechanics seemed horrendously complex but after picking it up again and reading the manual I'm having a blast.

I do think that you will need to at least glimpse a manual to understand the deeper concepts of the leveling and potion-making systems. It's still a fine looking game by today's standards albeit the animations are a bit stiff.

I just replayed it. Yes, it's replayable, and still my favorite of the two.

Do you use two screens/an ultra wide-screen? Damn... the high resolution and the panorama view make it look even better.

Yes it's playable, if you can stomach the backtracking across that godawful swamp for a couple of chapters.

Personally, I am finding it difficult to force myself to replay it due to that reason. Too much time unnecessarily wasted on tedious things that bring nothing to the game.

You can eliminate a lot of the backtracking by completing every single quest you can in the Temple Quarter before going to the swamp in Chapter 2. Do this and you don't have to make many trips with the ferryman.

Absolutely. I finished my 4th playthrough just one month ago (I have 250 hours logged in Steam) and I can only say that TW1 is my favourite game of the series by now.

I accidentally open the game and replay it all the time. I've logged over 200 hours into the game since a few months ago. There are parts that are tedious but if you pace yourself it's not so rough.

I must confess, I was wondering about that too.

That's actually what happens. I open it just to check it out again for nostalgia's sake and suddenly I'm half way through chapter four.'

OP this game is definitely still playable.

I sometimes use MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) and fire up games like Tetris, NBA Jam TE and the original Mortal Kombat. Those are still playable. Same with Prince of Persia (1989) on DOSBox.

You people are really arguing whether an 8 year old game is playable? You know GOG is making a killing out of games much older than that, right?

I say: stop this nonsense, don't waste anymore virtual paper and play TW1 already.

Yes it is! I can confirm that it's VERY playable and if you are a lore fan - this game is a must have. I bought Witcher : Enchanced Edition few days ago and Im so addicted to it right now, having blast playing through it.

Just started Chapter 2 in Vizima (game got me addicted at the end of Chapter 1) and I love the atmosphere, alchemy and overall character level-up system. And the mouse-click combat is really fun, I love how there are three different fighting styles with the sword - really reminds of Geralt from the books and from opening CG fight with stryga. What I also love about the combat is how brutal it actually is - when you get into fight with group of bandits, after the fight there's nothing but blood bath and limbs everywhere (dismemberment / finishing moves looks epic), a true massacare like in the books.

Im also now starting to understand why lots of people like Witcher 1 more than 2. Witcher 1 is much more hardcore - whether it's much more in-depth deeper combat system, alchemy system and the actual importance of potion making/drinking before fighting. For example you can't just "meditate" wherever you want. In Witcher 1 it's realistic - you have to make camp fire to meditate/upgrade.

All in all - Im liking this game very much :)

EDIT: But the voice acting - Oh My, it's really bad :D...
