I still practically get shivers watching gameplay of it. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBLch4Z8sqI )
Witcher 3 is great in a lot of ways, nobody is contesting that, but the way that environment and the graphics are put together, It still amazes me.

Anyone else agree?

The Witcher 2 is what, over 30 times smaller than The Witcher 3? Not so much amazed by The Witcher 2 (I mean, it looks ridiculously good, of course) than I am by The Witcher 3 to look that good in such a massive world.

As someone coming from The Witcher 1, I wasn't all that amazed by Flotsam. My general reaction was....

"Ah look! A forest! Is there any interesting lore behind it? No? Oh... eh, okay. Well... can go deep into it and explore it? No? Only a couple hundred yards? .....Okay."

The atmosphere was really great and all it just didn't.... hit me like some of the places in Witcher 1 did (Lady of the Lake *cough* *cough*.)

So much of that. The whole of Chapter IV was one of my most memorable.

I do really like Flotsam Forest, I think they did a really good job of it, but as has been said for Witcher 3 too look as amazing as it does for such an enormous world is pretty amazing. I like both, Flotsam Forest feels far more fantasy to me, but is much smaller. While Witcher 3 world, seems more realistic, so they both have their pros and cons.

Agree - nothing in The Witcher 3 quite matches that mystical beauty of Flotsam forest & Lobinden, which is a bit disappointing, but considering how insanely beautiful TW3 is in other respects, I'm okay with it. Plus it gives you a reason to return to TW2. In fact, there are areas in The Witcher that are still unmatched, not in terms of graphical prowess obviously but for sheer fantasy atmosphere.

it is just because in W2, map was quite small, so points of interests were closer together which made it look like the forest is fuller.. In W3 you have much larger areas around villages to cover, therefore interesting points are a bit far from each other. Personally i like how they handled it in W3.. W2 felt a bit small and limited..

I agree. I think Flotsam village and the surrounding forest do look more beautiful than anything in Witcher 3. Very atmospheric too.
Then again, such a thing wouldn't be possible to be implemented in TW3, given its massive scale.

It's sort of a disappointment though.....I'm not entirely gripped to the atmosphere in TW3 as much as I was in TW2.

it looks like the swamp area in witcher 3 except with large trees and invisible edges, past gen lighting, lack of pbr, and no dynamic weather.

so fuck no.

I love Flotsam, but a big part of it is the fact that a major portion of the game takes place in that one small area with so many quests. Add in the music (e.g., Nearly Peaceful Place), the characters, and the awesome game itself, and you have a great area.

The Flotsam forest was hand-crafted. TW3 uses SpeedTree.

Well I wouldn’t say so. The textures aren’t all that great and all ofc but moreover, Floatsam forest is all about fog and darkness. It’s not superior to W3 imo.

TW2 used SpeedTree as well… and in both games, the artist sets the presets and corrects then reworks afterwards.

TW2 may have used SpeedTree in some areas, but the Flotsam forest, cannot be SpeedTree. Too perfect a layout.

To me, witcher 1 definitely has the best atmosphere, witcher 2 is not bad, just it has the worst story telling and atomsphere among the series, imo.

Agreed. In my opinion TW1>TW3>TW2 in terms of atmosphere, story, gameplay, being true to the source material in terms of the world setting and the main character.

In my mind you can definitely extrapolate the following passage from the Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition artbook about Geralt's model when comparing the atmosphere the first two games:

Creating Geralt's character for the Witcher 2 was a challenge as difficult as it was for the first game, though for slightly different reasons. We were designing him from scratch back then, and we had to rise up to the expectations of fans of the novels. Now, however, our graphic artists faced a new challenge - designing the main character's appearance using the new graphical engine and all of its new possibilities.

To me The Witcher 1 was 99% perfect. The atmosphere, the architecture, world lore, characters were all unlike most Western RPGs. In TW2 I saw a stark contrast and a huge departure from the 1st game and Sapkowski's world overall. In TW2 Geralt essentially becomes a pack mule hoarding, crafting and swapping gear like there's no tomorrow. The locations start to look more like a dream sequences rather than a grim realistic setting that was presented in the books and the 1st game. Even monsters get created from the ground up and are not that interesting to the Slavic-influenced monsters from the 1st game and books. The differences that made the 1st game stand out in the crowd started to wane and that trend continued with the 3rd installment.

And even now when I read Wild Hunt reviews 90% of reviewers hadn't even played the 1st game (or read the books) which is a shame because the first game offers you so much more in terms of immersion. And that very same fact [that most of them didn't play the 1st game] makes it obvious that CDPR did succeed in marketing and selling the 2nd and especially the 3rd game to the maximum possible audience. They catered to the widest possible audience which is why you see people asking for an option to create their own customized character (and some labeling the lack of that as one of the drawback of the 3rd game).

Now don't get me wrong The Witcher 2 is a really good game it's just that it has so many characteristics that differ it from the whole Witcher universe and make it hard to consider it a part of said universe.

TW3 is certainly a step up from the 2nd installment but still in terms of atmosphere and immersion it still lags behind that old almost 10-year old game build on an outdated Aurora engine. If you look up the first work in-progress screenshots of TW1 and then compare them to the released version you'd find that the amount of effort CDPR put into it is astounding.

Comparing TW1 with TW3 IMHO is great example of "Less is more".

Pardon my rant.

Flotsam forest was a set-piece that definitely stood out in TW2 and is the most memorable one.

However for me, TW3 has many more of these. Especially Skellige, with it's wild, primal, untamed landscapes.

Totally agree with Gregski here. Witcher 3 landscapes are very natural and realistic.

Played both the witcher 1 and the witcher 2, i loved flotsam and its forest but the size of the forest was a huge drawback for me. can't forget the moment where zoltan told geralt the meeting place with the scoia'tael is deep in the forest, we moved 4 steps and reached the meeting place. that was and incredible immersion killer for me. the witcher 1 have incredible story good atmosphere in many cases it was better then the witcher 2. the forest in the witcher 3 are more grounded then flotsom thy have great atmosphere there, in my opinion some of them are better then flotsam. i'm on my second playthrue my first was 400 hours and now i 60 hors into the game and it is still amaze me.

@IrregularJohn There is no Slavic creatures in the books. Monsters in TW2 are most closely related to books-lore. ( Sorry for Google Translator English :) )

The forest in Flotsam is extra beautiful because Iorveth is in it.
Clearly TW3 lacks Iorveth to make the forests special.

Kikimore, koschey, вурдалак (vampire) for example at least going by their names. In TW2 rotfiend, kayran, Draug, elementals, nekkers - there are no monsters like this in the books. Go read them.
