Johnny Silverhand visual effect (Is this NEW-ish?)

So maybe I had just not noticed it before? Even after almost 200 hours of play? But last night I just noticed that if you get in "physically" close to Johnny his projected image starts to break down into a strange pixel splitting apart effect similar to this:

This only happens if you get in side of 3 feet of him and the effect intensifies greatly as you get to his center of gravity. Will not happen if you only zoom in with your vision.

I am thinking this is intended as part of his vanishing event if you try to walk thru him to get thru a door way or just to get to the other side of him other than walking around him. But I have never seen this before and I cannot believe I never tried walking through him before.

Note that I just upgraded to patch 1.21 this week.
I will try to get an actual screen shot to post.

Appeared in 1.2 or 1.21, at the same time as the correction of the vertical blue lines (which was sometimes cut), i think
Also visible in car with johnny "Human Nature". I don't know if it's "normal" or not.
