Latin translation

You know what guys? It came to me that since I was taking Latin at university, I could start a project to translate the dialogue into Latin. I know it's a dead language and does not have much practical use, or any use in the mainstream culture, but I thought it would be cool. I've it a decent amount learned and most of the grammar will be finished by the end of the semester, so it could be a viable idea for me.

I think translating into Latin would be awesome! It`s a very beautiful language from which most of the European languages originated. Too bad I have zero knowledge in this language, so I can`t participate. But still, GOOD LUCK!

Classical Latin or medieval latin? The latter would be more fitting, but the former more aesthetically pleasing

Not to discourage you, indeed I appreaciate your idea. But... seriously, you're about to go down the monster lair.... (are you sure you have a silver sword at least? LOL)
I mean: studying latin is great, but translating the game dialogue, with all the different nuances, the inflexions, the metaphors, the foul language, the jokes..... would be challenging even for a 50-years Latin scholar!

The primary issue with Latin is that it has a massive amount of dialects and each dialect has similar things and opposing things for the language. Many people that know Latin can't always perfectly understand each other when they congregate because of the studies of these different dialects.

Oh well. Oodgay ucklay with your endeavor. Translations seem like huge, soul-crushingly in-depth projects.

Don't underestimate three things:

* The need to have an understanding of the literature and culture of the language you are translating into. This is more than knowing Latin vocabulary and grammar. It is extensive exposure to the finest literature in Latin, and extensive knowledge of the times and places Latin was spoken.

* The need to know the art of translation. Translation is an art in itself, separate from and more difficult than the arts of writing and editing. Studying other works about translation, from Luther's commentaries on his translation of the Bible to Umberto Eco's Experiences in Translation, will be of great value.

* The sheer quantity of effort this will take.

Absolutely, the gravity of this project is very large. I may or may not proceed with this, but thanks for the information
