Let's Discuss Virtual Reality!

Because of Oculus Rift and Google's Recent Cardboard©®℗™, Virtual Reality has become a hot topic in gaming nowadays, so I figured a generally broad topic, specifically talking about that subject, would be a cool one to have. So here it is. This is that topic. Post here.

Do you think VR is the 'future of gaming' as some people call it? Do you like the recent VR obsession? Do you dislike it? What are your opinions on how it should develop? What type of input do you feel would work best with a VR display? All these questions and more are valid and answerable, so answer or ask these and many more questions as you want to ask or answer them.

Like it, I'm going to get a gaming rig for that express purpose once the OR releases.

I would definitely call myself a fan of the current VR trend, even with my limited (read: nonexistent) income. A lot of my favorite games could really benefit from VR, I feel. I mean, Fallout 3/New Vegas in VR? The Elder Scrolls? S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Far Cry 3 or Blood Dragon? Sign me up for the virtual reality future! That said though, I don't feel like VR is the future of gaming, per se', but more like it will become a significant branch of the industry, an optional aside, run mostly by VR hardware developers, modders, and just straight up VR-enthusiasts that gather around just giving people more options on how to experience the games they love. I definitely don't see VR becoming the de facto future of the industry, but I can see myself enjoying the possibilities.

I can see where VR has great appeal to the FPS fans, I've also seen some stuff on VR sports games.

I was actually just thinking about that earlier in the week, a sports game mode that would be as close to the real thing as possible, every player controlled by a real person with VR headsets and the proper motion control set-up where you're pretty much literally playing the sport, but you're at home. It would be an expensive option, to be sure, but it would be cool to see, and probably the only way I'd ever play a sports game, outside of a Career/Season Mode that plays like a BioWare RPG with choices and dialogues and characterization of coaches, players, and managers, with combat sections being replaced by sports matches.

I think it might be part of the future at the very least.

I don't know if I my self would find it all to usefull really though. I would have to try it first... but for the kinds of games I generally prefer to play VR would not really enhance my gaming experience so much so that I would feel a need to have it... in my opinion atleast.

We will have to see when it becomes so affordable that it would not ruin your month.

I think that fight night would be awesome with such a setup.

Or Just being ringside and seeing your favorite fighters duke it out in the ring/octogon

But I think the huge problem with the Wii and such is that there's nothing to hit. The human body is not made to randomly exert full force on nothing but air.

Set up a punching bag to hit as part of your VR rig, then. :p I'm sure that if there were a VR mode for a boxing game, somebody would make special glove controllers with impact sensors for this reason.
