Level cap - How to remove it

I know it's not supposed to be asked here but I couldn't find any other place. The Redkit forums are almost dead as well so I thought: why not here?

So basically I'm at the end of chapter 2 and I am already nearing the level cap. I am not looking to double the talents I have gotten per level. I merely seek a way to keep leveling past lvl 35 so that in the end I'll be a couple levels higher than 35. It's just not fun doing side quests when you earn nothing at all because you reached the level cap. I was not even trying to reach it that fast. =(

Edit: Just got to chapter 3 and maxed my levels. So now there's not much of a point doing side quests, other than the story and loot I suppose.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet.

There isn't a mod that just addresses the level cap. There is at least one mod that removes it, but also throws in a lot of other "features" like "always win at dice poker and fistfights" and "autoloot containers" (in a way that breaks a main quest): http://gq-game-mods.blogspot.com/2013/09/witcher-2-convenience-mod.html

But here's the way to do just the level cap.

Get Gibbed's RED Tools from the Nexus: http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher2/mods/52/?

Extract it and use it to extract the game scripts. Do this in a scratch folder, NOT your CookedPC folder, because it will make a mess.

Gibbed.RED.Unpack "<path-to-the-witcher-installation>/CookedPC/base_scripts.dzip"

For example: "C:/Users/Chris/Downloads/Gibbed's RED Tools/Gibbed.RED.Unpack" "G:/GOG Games/The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition/CookedPC/base_scripts.dzip"

This should give you a tree of folders rooted at base_scripts. Edit the file base_scripts/game/player/player.ws (Notepad will work). Find the text "if (level < 35) {" and change it to "if (level < 99) {" and save the file (as "All Files", otherwise Notepad will inconveniently save it as player.ws.txt).

Make a folder CookedPC/game/player in your Witcher 2 game, and copy your modified player.ws into that folder.

So I installed this gibbed's red tools to my desktop and I got: Gibbid red pack, strings and unpack.exe but all it does is make a cmd screen pop up and close. So I am not too sure what to do next. I am now working in CMD and made myself to the folder where the Gibbed.RED.Unpack.exe is located. Now what do I write?

Just on a side note. I think TW2 is well balanced in general. I.e. in my playthroughs I didn't feel like it became too easy towards the end. Removing the level cap will provide an option to grind too much and make the game way too easy (which for me would be annoying for example).

True, I know I don't necessarily need it. I just want it so I feel rewarded for doing quests, not to get extra levels. If you can max out your level without too much effort at chapter 2 before starting chapter 3, it's really annoying to continue without getting any exp reward.

I guess. I didn't really try grinding, so my levels usually go up slower. Except may be when I was trying to get some expensive armor and had to hunt in the nekker caves a lot of times :) On the other hand there are some dwarves with infinite pockets, so at times I got a lot of money from the arm wrestling ;D.

The grinding I did, which wasn't much of a grind, was walking up and down the harpies 10 - 15 times. That's it. (chapter 2 Iorveth) Also per harpy run you get at least 300 orens from their feathers alone. Now I know why people were surprised how I was poor the last time I played. (I didn't know about the harpies being such good money makers)

My Geralt is always low on orens, since all money goes to buy equipment and books :)

The incantation is Gibbed.RED.Unpack "<path-to-witcher-2-installation>/CookedPC/base_scripts.dzip"

For example, my game is installed at G:/GOG Games/The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition, so I open a cmd window and cd to where Gibbed.RED.Unpack is (same thing you did) and then run (the quotes are important):

Gibbed.RED.Unpack "G:/GOG Games/The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition/CookedPC/base_scripts.dzip"

and this will unpack some folders and a lot of files under them, into a new folder base_scripts in your current folder.

Then you can cd to base_scripts/game/player and run

notepad player.ws

Finally, save the resulting file to a new folder (again, this is my path, yours will be similar but different):

G:/GOG Games/The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition/CookedPC/game/player/player.ws

(making sure that you select file type "All files" so Notepad doesn't get unhelpful ideas about converting player.ws to player.ws.txt)

When you next launch the game, the game will see the file at game/player/player.ws and use it instead of the original copy of the file in base_scripts.dzip.

It won't let me do that as when I installed TW 2 years ago, it was in c:\program files (86x)\GOG.com\The Witcher 2 Enhanced edition

It crashes with exception error and stops working, etc. So I guess I'd need to redownload the whole game and install it on C:\gog games ?

Because I'm 99% sure it has to do with permissions and stuff.

That's funny, it shouldn't fail, and I haven't seen it fail. It doesn't need to be installed in any special place, just a place where you know where it is (and put quotes around the pathname, if there are spaces in it).

Alternatively, make a copy of the base_scripts.dzip file to a more convenient location. You don't have to move the whole install. That's the only file you need.

Okay I've done all the steps. I'm going to see if it worked. :)

Unfortunately that did not seem to work. The bar goes full but it doesn't level me to 36 or give me a talent point.

This is what my player.ws file (located in: F:\GOG Games\The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition\CookedPC\game\player) looks like:

// EXPERIENCE AND TALENT POINTS
function ResetLevel()
{
level = 0;
}
// Levelup
function SetLevelUp()
{
var levelname : name;
var talents : int;

if (level < 99)
{
level = level + 1;

talents = GetTalentPoints();
SetTalentPoints( talents + 1 );

levelname = StringToName("Level" + level);
GetCharacterStats().AddAbility( levelname );
theSound.PlaySound("gui/other/levelup");
theHud.m_hud.NotifyLevelUp( level );
thePlayer.SendStatsToGui();

}

if ( level > 9 ) theGame.UnlockAchievement('ACH_LEVEL_10');
if ( level > 34 ) theGame.UnlockAchievement('ACH_LEVEL_35')

Sorry it didn't work as intended. I'm not in a position to troubleshoot right now, not until late Thursday night.

Did you find any solution? Cause I haven't so far.
