Limited saves, no notice?!

Limited saves, no notice?!

Why is the game lying to me and telling me it's saving when it isn't?

It seems, once I get beyond a certain number of saves, saving does nothing. Sure, I can quicksave over the quicksave slot, but no hard save will appear. I have to delete an earlier save to make one.

This would only be a minor annoyance if the game actually told me about it. But no, I still get the reassuring, liar-face "Game Saved" message, whether one is saved or not.

This is an RPG. I save a lot. For whatever dumb design choice, they opted not to have save slots I could alternate between, like every other rpg ever, they make a new, separate save every time. And then, once I've gotten to a certain number (seems to be about 32, oddly enough), without any warning at all, hard saving does nothing.

I've just lost two hours' progress, because it had been that long since I quicksaved, and took the game at its word that any of the ten or so normal saves I made would be, you know, saved.

Definitely not happening for me. Are you usingb the Steam version, by chance? I read somewhere that the Steamn Cloud synchronization can cause problems, try turning it off for TW2.

It is off. I turned it on briefly, but that caused problems with the pictures for the saves (they still don't always match up, quicksaves in particular) so I turned it off almost immediately.

It's annoying, and disconcerting, not being able to rely on something as fundamental as saving.

Maybe you ran out of disk space? Remember that saves may be on different disk than game because they are in "My Documents" folder.

I ran into the same problem in my most recent playthrough of them game with the EE-update.

Sucks, just had to get used to constantly going back and deleting old saves. Next time I plan on playing The Witcher 2 I'll reinstall it first, see if that fixes the problem.

(steam version)

At a guess, he's talking about the Xbox version? I gather that has a limited number of save slots...

*edit* Read it again. Never mind :)

I think I figured it out, and man is it asinine. So, Steam limits cloud saves to 100mb per game. Fine. It also, once you enble it, causes TW2 to save in a different folder than My Documents. Whatever. Here's the kicker, though. Even if you turn cloud saves off, you are still limited to only having 100mb of saves on your own hard drive. If you go over, it just doesn't save.

Cloud saves are supposed to be a backup. What kind of backup is that? And why on earth would that limit apply to my own hard drive, and why would it still be there when the cloud is disabled?! I almost feel violated, and I definitely feel angry.

There's supposedly this awkward, complex fix to get the game to save where it originally did someone was kind enough to post, but I haven't tried it yet: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2663890

So dumb.

I think it's bug, not a feature ;).

thebigJ, prepare yourself for a buttload of work. You're gonna have to corrupt your files and trick the Steam Cloud into erasing itself, and then edit the .ini file...if you're not up for that, just get you GOG code, copy your quicksave, delete the steam version and download the GOG version, drop your quicksave in the saves folder and hey presto you are a go.

A simple Fix from official Side would do it ;-)

It sounds like it's a Steam problem, so they should make a fix.

Yeah, I think I'll just use my GoG code, because that sounds like a pain. It's a shame, this is the first serious issue I've ever had with Steam.

Thanks for listening to my anger, everyone. Hopefully this might at least notify other people with this issue.

Steam Cloud deleted my save for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light about a year and a half ago, and since then I've had Cloud disabled for all games because I don't want that to happen again (I don't really play on multiple PC's anyway so Cloud wasn't much of a benefit for me to begin with). I really think that Cloud should ask before synchronizing saves (especially if it's going to overwrite what's on the hard drive) and there should be a way to see the saves on the Cloud through the Steam client and delete them if desired. And of course the issue you described should never have happened. It's ridiculous to limit hard drive saves to what can fit on the Cloud.

Anyway, I haven't had any trouble with the GOG version of Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition so far :D (I originally had the retail version of the game but had trouble patching it, so I ended up uninstalling it, redeemed my CD-key and then just downloaded the already-patched GOG version of the game)
