Linux and open source

I have recently upgraded (yes you read me well upgraded) 2 of my PC to Linux (Ubuntu Hardy Heron), this is probably one of the best thing i ever done to them. Everything works so smoothly and i love how easy it is :) Also, the size of it, the basic installation including Office (open office) and Photoshop like software called Gimp is about 1Gb. There are many extras that comes with it but this is the major ones AFAIK. To have the same thing on a Windows installation, you would need a minimum of 2Gb.What i like too is all those free software and games that you can get, for almost every Windows software, you can get an open source one as good and sometime better. They even reproduce the interface so you dont get lost.Who here is under linux and, which distro ? Which Distro would you recommend for such and such kind of users. example: I want to learn how Linux works, i want to be able to understand what files to modify to customize the way it operates my cpu or video card etc... so, to learn this, where should i go or which distro should i use. I have seen the Linux from scratch project but, i've seen that this is hard at first and, that to get a good start up, Gentoo would be a good choice, again, Gentoo can be too much technicaly advance so, i should go with archlinux or was it PcLinuxOS or VectorLinux ? You see my point ? We could also make a collection of links for anything, i dont mind keeping it up to date... It would be nice to show peeps how to run The witcher under linux (i know, we have something about this already but, we can link it here and if it is a bit mixed up, we could work it out !)Even if this is The Witcher forum, i think it is a good place to talk about it cause the audience is mature and would probably like to learn/try Linux.Did you know there are special instalation of linux that can help your kid at school (any language) ? You want to learn about linux, dont be afraid to ask here, there are live cd's that when you start your computer with that cd/dvd in, it will run linux Without changing anything on your hard disk... This is a good way to test it... Also, how long does it takes to re-install Windows with all the right drivers and all of the updates ? 3-4 hours ? You can do the same in 30 mins max WITH Office and Gimp when you install Linux. Believe me, you wont regret it.

Well, I am being with Ubuntu. Used Wubi to install it, as I do not actually use it yet for serious stuff, just learning.Though I am having a few problems ( as one could see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=876445), it pretty much seems very good and somewhat fascinates me :)

I use Mandriva Linux everyday and Debian from time to time ;) But I plan to change my system to KateOS since it's much faster and responsive :)@Mobidoy Please don't write that you can install Linux with Photoshop since it is not true... With Linux you get GIMP which is at least as good (or even better) but it's different program. Some might think you try to deceive people not knowing Linux ;) But I agree with you that installation takes much less time and after it you have system full of all kind of programs (most users won't need anything more than basic installation).I also think that it is good opportunity to show CDP Red how many Linux users are there that want to play The Witcher so maybe they would make port of the game or even native installer for The Witcher 2.

My husband adores Linux, but he's not sure that he wants The Witcher ported to Linux, because then it would be too easy to play when he's supposed to be working. If he has to boot Windows in order to play, it's a much bigger psychological threshold to cross. :)

I'm on openSuSE 10.3, basically because I was too lazy to switch to Ubuntu. If SuSE continues to suck as much as it has been ever since they sold out to Novell, I'll probably move soon, though ;) I love my emacs, and do most of my writing with LaTeX, I have Quanta for my web stuff and GIMP for what little I do with graphics. And I would love to see more games running under Linux, because gaming is the only reason I still have a Windows partition at all...

I do agree with you, i will change it to Gimp (photoshop like software).Anyone tried virtualization ? I was thinking of using it to try different Linux Distros. As for Witcher on Linux, sorry for your husband but they should do it... not only them, but other gaming cie.... With the latest Ubuntu and the community it has, people should try it more and more, that would help them in seeing how powerfull their system can be and, how is life without viruses, trojan etc.... Another thing is, the choice... It is so nice to be able to test many text editors (simple notepads) just to find the one that suits your needs and, if you dont find it, you can ask for it and someone can add what you need to an existent text editor. And this is true for about anything. As for bugs, i was surprised the first time i found a bug and reported it, an hour later, there was a reply that it was fixed...... What, hey, i did not had to wait 14 months for a service pack that creates more problems...

While I usually have a Debian based GNU/Linux partition/image at hand on my systems for building some bleeding edge builds of some Linux centric software I have never been all that enthused with it. I prefer the more cohesive BSD OSs and their many relatives (I'd include Mac OS X in this group). If you are running on a commodity x86 PC you more often than not can run Linux binaries as is on the FreeBSD OS. My biased perception is that they actually behave snappier :) The ease of installation of a FreeBSD system is pretty amazing nowadays. I'm currently waiting for the PC-BSD 7 release bringing KDE 4.1 goodness to the desktop. On second place on my top OS list comes the BeOS/Haiku. I have some hope for the Haiku OS since it seems to be coming along at a good pace and the pre-alpha dev images run decent enough on real modern hardware. But I'm all fro the GNU part of the development effort :)/Dan

...a man goes away for 7 days...I've started with Slackware ( a distro created by Patrick Volkerding in 1992 ) in 2003, had a stable Slackware for normal use and tested every distro that i could download :)in 2005 I switched to Zenwalk ( based on Slackware ) until 2007 when i switched to Debiannow I'm running, on my 2 systems, Sidux ( www.sidux.com ) which is Debian Sid + some scriptsi liked Slackware as a starting distro, while Gentoo and FreeBSD have great handbooks they're learning curve is pretty steep, it takes a lot of time to get them just working, while you learn a lot of new things pretty quick, which is great but can be hard ( OK, this was true back then, now you have GUI installers that get the job done fast, but you can do it the old fashion way too )a Slackware install gives you a working system to tinker with at your own paceDistroWatch is a good place to find info/news on distros, do keep in mind that the ranking on the site is solely based on users showing interest in different distros, it's not a "Best distro" ranking, actually since there are so many peoples and tastes it's impossible to find one distro that can satisfy them all, so test as many distros as you can find in a download mirror near you, and chose the one that fits you best and shape it to your taste ;) and do test new releases from time to time, you never know when another distro can surprise you :Dabout Linux and The Witcher, there is a dedicated thread :) the short story: it works, through WINE, with some stuff messed up, bad performance, and morally challenging tricks ;)I think it goes without saying that I want a native version, given that The Witcher runs on a ( DirectX9 ) modified version of the Aurora engine by BIoWare, which had this engine ( on OpenGL ) for Neverwinter Nights, which had a Linux/Mac version ( without official support AFAIK ) released a year after the Windows one, and it is still updated on par with the Windows versionvideo: The Witcher - Monastery Vizima - Linux in WINEvideo: The Witcher - Sewers Combat - Linux in WINE ;)

I am using Linux as well. Since two years now Ubuntu completely replaced Windows for me. My needs can be completely satisfied by Ubuntu. And I think I learned a lot about how the Linux System and the Opensource mentality works. I love that Ubuntu brings all the progamms you need with a basic installation. And it's ready to use.Of cause the best is, that witcher works now^^ :D

looks like some things got better in the mean time:1. the patched 1.4 game does not need the disk in drive so it just works ( the EE DVD still needs the disk :( )2. WINE was patched to allow the registration process to work out:D

We are in the Off-Topic Forum here and I see that Mobidoy started this thread. He has had some health problems and I was worrying about him; not having seen his replies in any forums here for maybe a month or even more now? Is he going to get better and be back?
