Losing Pretty Much All of My Crowns For No Reason

I started up my game today and started working on completing all of the Witcher contracts. I did a couple and then realized my gold stack was down to 1,777.... I had over 66,000 crowns before. I hadn't been killed by guards in a city or anything so I had no idea how it could've gotten that low. Luckily I had some older saves that I loaded up and I'm trying to figure out exactly what makes my crowns disappear. The only thing I can think of that's doing it is the fact that I get over 66,000 crowns. It's weird, I'll sell some extra stuff that puts me above 66,000 and everything's normal. If I fast travel, it will immediately make me lose all except a few hundred crowns. If I save while over 66,000 and re-load the game, I lose it all as well. This is a big problem, I'm stuck, unable to progress or else I'll lose all the money I've made. I just read some other site that says the developers of the game put a $65k cap but I'm hoping that's not true and I'm hoping the devs wouldn't have made it so you just lose all that money for absolutely no reason. That makes no sense at all and should be removed asap. I don't care if my money stays at 65,000 but making us lose all of it? That's ridiculous.

I believe there is a soft cap of some kind, yes. Exchange your crowns for orens at the loan shark to stay under the 66k limit while losing nothing.

Alright thanks for the tip, I'll try that. That seems so stupid though, why would they make it so you just lose all of it? I would understand if it just stayed at 66k and didn't go any higher but just outright losing it all with no warning whatsoever? If I didn't have a saved game I would've been so pissed that all that time and effort just vanished for no particular reason.

I agree, ofcourse. It is ridiculous to just suddenly steal all of your hard earned cash and flush it down the drain, I'm not sure why they implemented this feature, but it's also possible that it's just a bug.

It's linked to the way the game counts your money. It can basically only count from 0 to 65535. Once you reach the upper limit, the game resets the counter.

Yes, it's quite suboptimal.

Man, for such a detailed, extensive game they can't seem to handle one of the simplest things. That's like an aeronautics engineer not being able to make a decent paper airplane.

Spend as you go,
though hmmm - what could you meaningfully spend 65,000 Crowns on anyway?

It's just money, if you have plenty, that's fine.
Going back to zero is tricky through...

You can't pack every rake and ball of twine in Velen in your saddlebags.
Geralt is a Witcher not a packrat...

...and yet you can have more coin than Scrooge McDuck in your pockets - especially if you exchange Crowns for Florens at the pawn shop.

Where do you people get your money from? Seriously. ^_^
I've been close to having 1000 Novigrad Crowns once, but didn't make it. As there was this thing I wanted to buy...

To be fair though I'm not taking everything that is nailed down(like I did in Witcher 2) and I tend to hang on to certain items that is worth quite a lot.

I honestly like to have to struggle, haggle, and work for my money. Like in the books. It has the 'Oh, you killed a monster? Yeah we don't want it so dump it in the cesspit' mentality over it.

Running around with 50.000 would make money less interesting in my opinion.

Yet, I have to wonder, has this to do with game difficulty?

EDIT: @BearSchoolBro

May I ask what difficulty you are playing on? It is interesting.

I just buy meaningless gear and resell it for peanuts to lower my purse. I feel too baller for a witcher on the path.

I think mostly mods!

Also having 60k crowns cap is not bad. Seriously Geralt would just go on retirement w/ that enough of crowns.

Is this really a thing, when was it implemented ?
I'm just going around discovering all those smuggler loots in Skellige and sell it since i have finished pretty much everything else, but i hope i don't reach that cap.

In the 3-5 levels I loot every plant and any item and send them all. 1 by 1 orens fill my pocket with patience.
But it's true that having an amount of 50000 is pretty easy, too much esay for my taste. It's not the amount itself but its useless or wortless.

Having more than the 65k needed to break the system is relatively easy to do.

There is nothing really to spend money on, at least on normal difficulty. There is loads of money to be made if you sell items to the correct people. Armor to armourers and swords to blacksmiths instead of some wandering salesman. (This can cost you a good few hundred per single item if sold to the wrong person).

There is no mod or cheat required although some people get sore about it and call us cheaters when it happens.

Don't worry, I lost the same and just continued. You never really spend it so you sure don't miss it. Not to mention getting it back again is a piece of cake.

Thats not a feature, lol. xD

They simply used an unsigned 16bit integer, which has a range of 0 to 65.535.
If you happen to aquire more coin, an overflow is going to happen and u just start with 0 plus the value that was too big for the int variable to hold.

I just don't get how they came up with the brilliant idea not to use a more suitable datatype. :D

Strange, had 80k+ after my first playthrough and never lost my money, even after patch 1.05 :p

Nope. Item prices scale with their level. Lvl30+ swords and armors can net 1k+ each.
