making a silver sword and runes

so I was able to make a silver sword. But I have a sun rune that I would like to add to the sword but I don't seem able to add it to the sword through the options with the smithy.

I see the sun run in my crafting items and I see a circle where I really want to put it, but seem incapable of getting it do so.

am I just an idiot? do I need more than one rune? or formula to add it?

You add the rune later yourself.

Make the sword, then go into your inventory and equip it. Then click on the Sun Rune and drag it onto the sword.

This is the same way as you add the temporary enhancements such as blade oils or whetstone. However, the runes are permanent - once added, they can't be removed or replaced. You can still use temporary enhancements afterwards.
