Making money

Am I the only one having trouble making money to buy strong alcohol to make my potions? How is everybody else getting their money (please don't say poker, because I suck at it)? In most games you can pick up a lot of expensive armor and weapons you don't need and become the richest man in the game.

The best way to get the strong alcohol is to buy the cheap one and make it stronger (White Gull) :)

In addition, I usually sell a lot of Salamdra badges.I spent about one or two gaming days just hunting Salamandra at night in the Temple district. I usually have up to 20 badges and then sell them to he messenger in the Hairy Bear Inn.THe XP is a nice bonus :D

Sell everything you don't need anymore if you're running seriously low on orens - books you've read, any food you pick up that you don't think you'll use (or swap it for other stuff), any alchemical ingredients that you've got too much of.... I don't know how many drowner brains I have, and while they only sell for 1 oren each, they're kinda easy to come by if all else fails :) That and quest rewards generally give me enough money. And like Mike said, weak alcohol = white gull is your friend ;D

My Geralt was very poor in my first play-through of the game. Now I've realized that there are books I don't need to buy, because I'll find them just lying around in people's houses, and stuff I can sell that I missed the first time around -- make sure you talk to to con artist and get the Letter to Knight Eric and the accompanying key and clean out the lair of those cultists.I don't do this, because it doesn't really appeal to me, but you can make money fistfighting. Once you get the hang of punch-duck-punch-duck, you can win every fight, and if they're willing to bet 20 orens you can raise it to 40, and they'll still play.Sell off rings and necklaces and all that crap to the merchants, and sell books back to the antiquarian once you're finished reading them. There's a whole thread on getting enough money in the game; I'm sure a search will turn it up, and there's a long discussion there with lots of tips from people on how to acquire orens.AND there's the Cheapskate's Guide section of the wiki, where our very own Game Widow has raised pinching orens to an art form: http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Cheapskate%27s_Guide :D

hehe, actually, you can raise the 20's to 50, and the 50's to 100. ;) LOL And it's kind of funny to show up in a new town, head to the local bar, and "clean house." :D

The Witcher isn't a battle of material which you sell and get rich ;D There are only a few alternatives, yes indeed one is dice and fistfights as well. The other one is to collect all time (quite tedious cos Geralt can't carry tons of weapons) herbs and monster ingredients. An other one is the Cheapskate Guide Corylea mentioned. An other helpful guide is http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Guide_for_illiterate_witchersBut your Geralt is merely broke during chapters 1 and 2 maybe 3 as well. You will also earn money through contract- and side quests.

I use the fist- fighting to its fullest because i really stink at the dice poker. What I find is that there are plenty of side quests that earn mucho mula. There are so many NPCs that have little chores that pay pretty well. It's my favorite part of the game. I hardly ever have to sell off anything other than books, barghest skulls, drowner brains, wolf pelts, salam'der badges, and the like --and that's more for inventory control. In a pinch, I will go harvest torches to sell to the fences or the blacksmiths.

I dont think its the fact that you 'stink' so much as the fact that the NPC's cheat.

LOL It is kind of a turnoff to have a 5 high 5/3 full house, and watch the NPC keep a pair of 3's and roll three 6's. ::) Hahaha.

Gambling can be a good way to get Oren quickly. Depending on the Gambler, you can make off fairly well. But you have to find the right Gambler (i.e. one who bets high and is easy to beat). I found that the Old Woman in the swamp is a pain in the arse to beat. But Carmen, in the Trade District, is a better bet. Also, don't waste your dough on hookers. I haven't found one that actually advances any quest. Besides, Geralt will frequently hookup with NPC's throughout the quest anyway.Fistfights are a good way to get a little Oren rolling and get some XP. But brawling is not the way to get money quickly. Try selling daggers, axes, swords, etc., for some decent cash.

Also use the extra weapon slots to sell weapons. I never really use more than the 2 weapons. So I use those slotsto sell some. Get generally good at playing dice poker, even if you lose keep going, they will just increase the bets to make up.But do that once you have enough money.White gull is the way indeed...I miss the game already lol.

yeah... highest wage... like 110 .but i prefer to do it this way in act 2 -3 1 - in hairy bear - i go fist fight... then i gamble with muno... then i zone... i gamble with carmen and so on.. atleast not as boring... then reason why u need to zone is because muno is broke.. and u cant fight again without zoning:p i make 1-2 k in like 45 mins.. or less. then other way... er effective would be making specter oil... from the grease u collect along the way ... and the ingredients... ( grease +3 types ) = 20 orens... can make up to 2 k per shot.. dont know how long i took.. just keep on questing.. until i felt it was time for me to change a new armour.. the 5k one... and i got so much ingredients in my bank.. so i took them out and make use of them...

#1: Always buy the cheaper alcohols and upgrade them using White Gull#2: Gamble (if you can). Thaler is a quick way, Odo is (at night only, gamble, meditate, gamble etc), and the Hermit is.#3: Fistfight. Sell one of each 3-spot alcohol variety to the barmaid in the inn. Fistfight to gain cash. Buy alcohol. Meditate and make potions. If you already didn't know, for most MINOR items, selling one to a retailer causes them to stock them permanently. This works for herbs, alcohols and runes (temporary). This COULD be a bug, so don't expect it to last forever with upcoming patch releases.#4: Stay in the swamps for months: Attack "Bloedzuiger Island", and collect up Albar's Crystals, or group style huge numbers of drowners for Ginatz's Acid. White vinegar can be attained by attacking the cemetary repeatedly. Sell them to Kalkstein (only he will give a good price in Acts II & III). Albar's = 40 Orens each, Ginatz's = 15 Orens each, White Vinegar = 20 Orens each.#5: Kill those doggies. Dogs in the temple district have Dog Tallow, which remains a top quality oil base even in EE (1.4).#6: Sell those books. Once read, you don't need them anymore.#7: Sell those rings. The special signet rings are useless once you have proceeded to the next Act.#8: Sell weapons. Certain weapons are worth picking up just to sell, especially the Ceremonial Sword of Dwerthin. Even torches are worth 40 Orens a pop.#9: Raid all houses everywhere. Up to Act III, save the food and store in your innkeeper holdings. You can then sacrifice the food in batches to the Altar of Melletelle for "free" Misteltoe. The List goes on.

Collect all food from Kaer Morhen when you leave for the outskirts. There are several old peasant women who tell you about beatiary lore in exchange for food - you don't have to buy books then.
