Manipulating NPCs only with the first stage of Axii signs?

Maybe most of you say this is quite obvious - sorry if it is like that, but I want to make sure before I start to waste skillpoints. ^^

I currently have level 3/3 of the first Axii Sign so I can use it for manipulating NPCs. If I replace the spot for my active skills with the next stage of Axii signs... will I still be able to manipulate NPCs? Because only the first stage of Axii tells me I can manipulate others - and for trying I would have to waste skill points.

Yes, if you remove, it doesn't work.

I have both the first and second Axii skills at 3/3, and I replace one with the other when I suspect dialogue/combat. If there's dialogue I enable the manipulation one, if there's combat I enable the turning-enemy-into-ally one.
Sadly you can't do this mid-fight or mid-conversation, so I just guess whether I'm going to talk to someone or going to fight, beforehand.

I see, thanks a lot. So I guess it there will just be a lot of save and load. ^^
