isn't this a map that just calls out for multiple expansions?

Especially with a place like Toussaint so far to the south...

And the idea of secret places that we haven't seen yet! I suspect the tower of Gull might be one, given those screenshots that suggest a certain desert.

(also, mildly off topic, but Letho is Letho of Gulet right? And he's from Nilfgaard? Why is his last name attributed to somewhere in Aedirn?)

I think he just works/worked in Nilfgaard. And, being a Witcher, he travelled about quite a bit.

On another note, here is a complete map from the first game, for reference, for anyone interested. (Sorry about the size, but it's rather a detailed map.)

That's true, though the school of the viper seems to be heavily implied to be in Nilfgaard. I suppose he just chose a name like Geralt did, but it just seems odd to be that he'd pick a name so far to the north.

Now we have confirmation from in-game photo that Oxenfurt has a second "island" when compared to the map from the 35 min demo where it only was on one.

The second island is most likely the university itself, while the first is the town. I imagine that they originally tried to put both on the same island, but either had the time to flesh out the area more with the delays or felt that there wasn't good enough division between the two areas.

Do we know if we will be able to place (permanent) marks on the map? If I find a monster, which is above my level I would like to mark the place on the map so I know where I can find it later

This is a good question, I would like such functionality.

Yeah, I like that Scryar. I also miss being able to write down notes in an IG journal, like in NwN.

I saw a "custom marker" mentioned on one of the first maps we saw, a few weeks ago. I'm hoping that's what it is.

So nothing like this has been confirmed? That's dissapointing. Take the pietsmite gameplay for example. He is doing a quest and the bandits are about his level. Then he finds in that same area a "skull" golem, which onehits him. I guess the golem is at least 10 level higher. Once I reach this 10 additional levels 20 hours later I would have forgotten that there was a golem I could try to fight now.
I think it's essential that we have the possibility to mark the place on the map and note something like "level 30 golem".

That's promising. I hope we can make notes as well.

Take a look guys:

"When CD Projekt claimed that The Witcher 3 will be absolutely massive in scale, they weren’t joking. Thanks to a few NeoGaf users we can finally compare the map size of The Witcher 3 to several other open world games. So far the Witcher 3 map is around 136 km2 which only includes Novegrad, No Man’s Land and Skellige Islands. There are are around 4-6 regions more who sizes are unknown at this point.
That means The Witcher 3 is at least 3.7 times bigger than GTA: San Andreas (36 km2), 1.5 times bigger than GTA 5 (81 km2), 3.3 times bigger than Red Dead Redemption (41), 3 times bigger than Far Cry 4 (46 km2) and 3.5 times bigger than Skyrim (39 km2). In short, the final map will be absolutely massive in scale.

Their sources is Neogaf. What do you think?

I think that regions with black outlines are conquered by Nilfgaard (while northern kingdoms have red outlines), so it looks like about half of Keadwen is in hands of Nilfgaard already

The raw values sound about right, but the devil may be in the details. How much of the map area is populated and usable? How does that compare to the same metrics from the other titles?

Could be that the populated areas are in these ratios, slightly more (or more likely IMO) slightly less. Watching the current gameplays... I don't think there is much prospect of finding it "too small" so I'm not worried about it at all... but the beancounter in me wants to measure and compare... just because.

I think they're still referring to the same old unconfirmed numbers, so nothing new there. Still, I don't estimate the game to be much further from that size.

Yes, it looks like that. I wonder if any of the borders depend on your decisions in The Witcher 2, though; Kaedwen would be perhaps the only variable they could take into account. That small detail would be cool.

@guilhermecn I think they are talking out of their ass aka clickbait. I wouldn't count Neogaf forums as reliable source..

Yep. that's I wanted to discuss with you. As @Lieste said, the game is indeed very large, but the math can be trick. Precise numbers would be good and would clarify many things.

First thing I saw that! Maybe linked to

Henselts death? His defeat, but survival at Vergen, or his victory?

It would be certainly great!

I absolutely trust the size value given, it comes from a technical presentation by CDPR. However we have also seen that the in game map goes beyond the populated playable area by "a bit". This would be consistent with standard design and would support those ratios.... OTOH... we have also seen one rendered image of the NML area... this may be a true picture of the whole map area, a rendering at low res (used for distant vistas etc) or a visualisation not directly from in game assets.

It is possible that the map in noticeably bigger than that used within the structured quest area... which could make the sizes somewhat smaller than we might expect from the raw numbers. Can't tell. Doesn't seem important, other than for bean counting...
