Marcin Iwiński talks about CDP business history

Marcin Iwiński (co-founder and joint-CEO of CD Projekt) several months ago gave a talk about the history of CDP and The Witcher games at a game developer conference in Moscow. He was giving the talk in English, with immediate translation to Russian. Unfortunately, the translation can be heard better than what Marcin says himself, but if you crank the volume up, you'd be able to hear what he says in English. He talks about very interesting stuff. Here are the links to the videos:

No, this is a conference at a Developer's School or University in Moscow, from what I gather...

You probably mean this one: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-06-seeing-red-the-story-of-cd-projekt

It covered CDPR's story very well.

Great story about the company's growth, hitting a wall, and then coming back again, only just started playing The Witcher (I just got inside the town, and figuring out the story behind the silver sword), and I appreciate CD Projekt even more for their hard work already love the game, hopefully I'll have Witcher 2 finished by the time 3 hits the shelves.

Have fun :)

I hope CDP will add Linux as part of their business plans. That's the only thing that's missing in the company as of now.

I recently found an almost an hour and a half long Russian podcast with Marcin Iwiński (direct link to podcast mp3 file), where at the end in Q/A part he says that they are interested in releasing their games on Linux/SteamOS in the future. The questions in this podcast are in Russian, but Iwiński almost always answers in English, so it should be mostly understandable.

By the way, I recommend listening to that podcast to everybody, some other interesting info there, besides the Linux part. Iwiński starts talking in English from 12:00.

The question and answer about Linux is at 1:29:05. The argument by Marcin Iwiński why they didn't plan Witcher 3 for Linux so far, is common though pretty much false - he claims it's hard to support multiple distros. Many developers don't have any issues with that and their games are playable on tons of distors. CDPR guys really need to talk to Linux developers about it, especially those who work on actual porting, instead of repeating this beaten mantra of "hard to support". He can't be talking out of experience, because CDPR never released anything for Linux. Note also, that the answer has nothing to do with profitability. Someone should connect CDPR with Ryan Gordon for example. He can set them straight on Linux issues (he gave a good talk about porting games to Linux on Steamdev days).

On the bright side, he said there that they are interested in their game on SteamOS. So it means that Linux port is possible in the future, but he didn't say anything about how soon that can be.

I posted the transcript of the answer in the dedicated thread: http://forums.cdprojektred.com/thre...SX-and-etc-)?p=1245071&viewfull=1#post1245071
