Massive Z-fighting
Hey CDProjectRED and fellow Witchers... I just started up Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2, hoping that the excessive z-fighting of some geometry (most notably Geralt's hair) would be fixed.
This was not the case - if anything it has increased, near as I can tell. The z-fighting seems to affect mostly hair and beard geometry on characters. This wouldn't be terrible if it only occurred at long distances, but it shows up in full force even during conversations close-ups! If I had to guess I'd say the z-buffer error in conversations can be up to about a centimeter. The Witcher 2 is a modern game; 32 bit z-buffer depth should put the error at a a few micrometers at that distance.
I haven't tried everything, but I'd wager I've tried most solutions that could reasonably be expected to solve the issue. I've tried multiple nVidia graphics drivers, from 275.33 to the current 295.73, each time making sure to completely uninstall the previous driver and reboot. I've toyed around with nVidia Inspector for hours (nevermind that nVidia Inspector doesn't seem to have any effect on TW2 EE). I've even tried trawling through some ini files to somehow manually increase z-buffer depth. But to no effect.
With the incredible amount of work that went into this game, a graphical glitch so obvious (it occupies the center of the screen for more than 90% of the game time!) is a crying shame. Are there any plans to fix this issue? Are the developers aware of it?
-For good measure, here's a basic description of my gaming system:
CPU: Intel Core i7-960 3.2GHz 8MB S-1366
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E X58 S-1366
RAM: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Kingston HyperX (6x2GB)
GPU: 1024MB Gigabyte Nvidia GTX560Ti GDDR5 PCI-E
