Merchant restock - lower gold

Merchant restock - lower gold

Merchants, at least some of them anyways, seem to be restocking only a smaller portion of their starting gold.

When I first started my first play through not that many days ago, the Novigrad blacksmith had a lot higher amount of gold - and when he ran out I would meditate or go do other stuff for the 5-7 days it took to restock.

But now, he restocks only a tiny portion of what I recall he started with. Same for the alchemist outside Novigrad that had 500 gold as his limit but now only restocks to 125.

Is this something that's always been the case or a recent change?

I found some merchants never restock to their original amount. The alchemist just outside Novigrad is one, although he's special as he buys everything at full price. Good merch to sell your unwanted monster trophies IMO.

I'm not complaining as i'm told we get to be swimming in money later so no big deal. But the full price alchemist you can never sell your trophies to after the one time - since he restocks at 125 and cheapest trophy is like 250 and most are 300+. Game wont let you sell for a loss and just disables the sell. Closest i can come is i buy some alchy dust i dont even need and then sell him my trophy to get my own gold back.

i probably just need to explore and find more merchants with higher gold because other than the alchemist, i mainly sell armor to the novigrad armorer who has a decent limit, but the blacksmith (regular one, not hattori - havent unlocked him yet) has such a low limit, it makes selling even partial load impossible. I go around to the 3-4 village armorers and always run out, so end up doing the Meditation Simulator Pro game more than actually playing quest/combat W3

may have to cave in and just go get the increased shopkeeper gold mod but have been holding out to do my 1st playthrough completely vanilla

If you're having a problem with too much loot, not enough merchants with crowns, there's also a loan shark located in Novigrad who's crowns refresh every time you return to the dialogue menu. He buys everything except monster trophies too. Not the best prices, but a good way to clear out your inventory.

I thought they replenished the money over time, like two days or so? I can't really be sure though, it just seems if I go back after a while they have more money. I tend to alternate between blacksmiths and vendors. Try meditating for a day or two and see if their money increases.

Bit of a complicated answer so will just hit the highlights -
a) yes, merchants restock, BUT it seems they have two gold values - initial starting gold + restock gold
-the initial starting gold is there until you deplete it, and the restock gold is added each restock period which seems to be 5-7 days, no shorter than 5, no longer than 7

-if you don't deplete the entire initial starting gold, it will look like he is restocking a lot more than he actually is - for example:
say merchant starts with 1000 gold - hypothetically lets say it is made up of 700 one-time starting gold + 300 restock gold
-if you lower him down to 700, go away for 5-7 days, then you'll see he is back to 1000 and you will think he restocks to 1000, but that is not true. What he restocks to is just the max restock value
-if you deplete this example merchant to 100 (from his 700+300) start, then you will see after he restocks that he has 400 (his prior balance of 100 + 300 restock)
-once you deplete a merchant to 0, then he will only restock his restock portion

b) it seems the restock period is no shorter than 6 days, no longer than 7 days. There are some odd behavior sometimes where I've had a merchant get a small partial restock before the 5 days but I think that was a bug because I've only ever seen that once.

Thanks for that detailed explanation jacozilla, I never went into it that thourily myself but it would explain why some merchants I've been to seemed have had less money. It's more noticeable with those with small amounts.

Making money isn't the irritating part, it's having to go to 5 different vendors to sell stuff so you aren't overburdened.

Novigrad needs a richer market square. It's a major port so it should have merchants coming and going everyday.

Its best to go to the Loan shark buy his coin sell your stuff then go to the banker and turn in the coin for more than you paid

---------- Updated at 08:19 PM ----------

Loan shark is at the southern gate left then left again
