Microsoft offers free upgrade to Windows 10 for users of Windows 7 and 8.1

As the title says. After the release of Win 10 you've got one year to upgrade for free. Nice gesture by Microsoft. If 10 shows itself to be a good OS I' will seriously consider an upgrade from 8.1.

This is very awesome I guess for PC gamers who don't want to purchase Windows 10.

I however will be purchasing Windows 10 and another 3 copies for family members and friends. I don't like products being given away for free to me. That is just me only though.

I hope CD Projekt RED adds DirectX 12 support to the PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Windows 10 support.

Also I have been hearing rumors for a few months that Microsoft will be having Windows 10 go the subscription model. This is not true at all yet it's just a rumor and there is no confirmation Microsoft will do that. So people afraid of Windows 10 being monthly or yearly subscription you can calm down now don't get scared. I got scared of it too when I heard it and said if Microsoft does do that to Windows 10 I will switch to Linux before I can even blink.

It is also expected Microsoft will end up selling 600 million licenses of Windows 10, due to so many businesses and people on PC who did not upgrade to Windows 8 and Windows 7 nearing end of life support by 2020 a lot of IT firms will be rolling out Windows 10 licenses to their employees instead of Windows 8 so they don't have to suffer from life support of Windows 7 and Window 8 when Windows 8 gets close to it. Search on google for this I don't remember what the web site article is called.

As long as Windows 10 is an improvement on 8 I will be upgrading for sure. I'm glad they're including Windows 7 users too.

Sweet, with DirectX12 and if they bring the Master Chief collection to it (rumours,) I'll most likely take the free upgrade.

Fable Legends is just the first of the major game franchises from Microsoft Studios coming to Windows 10 and we will have more to share in the coming months.

Ok I'm very happy Fable Legends is coming to PC now.

A question I have that has been confusing me. Does anyone know if Fable Legends will be a Free to Play (F2P) game or a full retail priced video game?

For months I have been hearing that Fable Legends will be a Free to Play (F2P) video game and others saying it will be a full priced retail video game costing something like $40 dollars (USD) or so.

Is there a price on how much it will be? The free upgrade is only for one year

Immediately, no reason at all. Ultimately, Windows 7 going off support and DirectX 12 being supported only on Windows 8 and 10.

Many IT departments took one look at Windows 8 and said "never in my shop." Microsoft didn't like being hammered like that in their most important market. Thus for Windows 10 they're actually listening to their customers instead of foisting off a wannabe smartphone OS on desktop power users.

Ok the rumor of Microsoft making Windows 10 a subscription model is debunked, Windows 10 will not go the subscription model.

http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-windows-10-will-not-be-sold-as-a-subscription/

http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/01/21/the-next-generation-of-windows-windows-10/

A Q&A quote from someone.

Q&A: Nadella says calling Windows 10 a service does not imply change in business model.

So people who believed this rumor can be calm now.

Actually, it's very likely that DX12 will be a Windows 10 exclusive, especially with the free upgrade option now.

And future games from Microsoft will probably be Win10 exclusives as well. Fable Legends for example is such a game that will only work on XboxOne and Win10 PC.

WILL I BE ABLE TO PLAY FABLE LEGENDS ON AN EARLIER VERSION OF WINDOWS?
Fable Legends is designed specifically to take advantage of the cross-device gameplay functionality that Windows 10 offers, and will be available exclusively to Windows 10 and Xbox One.

More information on the topic from RPS:

Our roving reporter at the big Windows 10 event in Redmond is currently playing with Microsoft’s newly-announced holo-goggles, more on which soon, but she has been able to send back to useful bonus info about Win 10 and games in the meantime – including whether DirectX 12 is exclusive to the new OS, how this ‘upgrade to Win 10 free for a year’ offer works and whether there’ll be keyboard/mouse support for streamed Xbox One games.

So DirectX 12 will, we’re told, only work with Windows 10. That’s a bummer for people who don’t want to upgrade from Win 7 or 8, but sugaring that pill slightly is the newly-revealed free upgrade to Win 10. But it’s only free if you upgrade during the first year following Win 10’s launch. As far as our correspondent has been able to establish, so long as you upgrade within that first year, Win 10 is yours for free forever, rather than that it starts shouting at you to pay a year later. Update: Microsoft have explained the upgrade offer a little more here.

We’ve also been informed that DirectX 12 will require a new graphics card in order to take advantage of everything it’s got to offer, though some existing cards will be able to get some benefit from it. That’s a bit of a stinker – early word had it that current DX11 boards would do just fine. We don’t know the full story there yet though – trying to find out more about that ASAP.

As for the Xbox One game streaming to W10 PCs and tablets, sadly controls cannot be translated to mouse and keyboard, so an Xbox controller will be required.

Also, more Xbox One games will be coming to PC in addition to the already-announced Fable Legends, but no names or dates on that yet.

Finally, despite the telltale presence of Steam icon next to the Xbox one during the MS demo, there is apparently no special Steam integration in Windows 10.

We’ll have more about Win 10 and the hologoggles tomorrow, all being well.

Win 10 will also feature a new Web browser called Spartan. I'm curious how/if it improves over the old IE. Not that I will switch that easily from my beloved FF, however...
