Nemesis system is an absolute blast initially, but it has gotten boring relatively quickly. I've been playing for maybe 10 hours and I'm already kind of over it.
At the start I had my ass handed to me when I didn't gather intel on cronies and then a few of them ranked up and became practically impossible, and then there was that great satisfaction of a couple hours later finally getting strong enough and after learning their weaknesses, taking them out. However, now I know exactly how the system works, it's kind of boring.
Gather Intel > Find Captain > Slay super easily with whatever weakness you can abuse. Even the big Warchief's weren't that difficult.

It's pretty much exactly what most people thought it would be from the initial footage. It's just Arkham + Assassin's Creed with the Nemesis System. It does the Assassin's Creed elements (Stealth, Collectibles, Map Activities etc) better then AC, in that I was actually able to very slightly enjoy them, which is way more then I can say for almost every AC title. It does the Arkham elements (Mostly Combat) worse, but that's mostly due to Rocksteady just knowing their "Free Flow System" so well that they nail it and it's the kind of system that just feels "right" with Batman, but weird when applied to anything else, especially a dude with Sword.

I haven't finished the Story but it's pretty uninteresting, definitely not the appeal of the game. Writing just feels like someone watched the LOTR Movie Trilogy and tried to write a game in that kind of "prose", like fuck there's even a "Fly you fool" line said by your Wraith partner at an entirely pointless moment, it made me cringe, hard. There's also this relationship between Gollum/Wraith/Talion and it's very obviously supposed to be a mimic of the Sam/Frodo/Gollum relationship in LOTR but it just feels so fucking shoehorned in and unnatural. If The Witcher games are good "fanfiction", this is a great example of bad fanfiction.

It's the kind of game where I'd recommend just borrowing off a friend, or waiting for a heavy steam sale. You can happily skip it and not have missed out on much, but if it's cheap or you get the chance to play it for nothing, it has some hours worth of mucking around fun value.

Well, it seemed a bit like the dudebro's interpretation of Middle Earth, especially when you look at the box art. I still get that feeling from that degree but there is more Tolkien here than any game has had to this point, and I applaud the fact that they didn't imitate the Peter Jackson formula, as much as I adore it. It's not perfect at all but far better than previous attempts.

I suppose the think I dislike the most about it is that the game world seems a bit gamey, like the enviroments are not natural but made more to accomodate the gameplay. Assassin's Creed 3 did nature a lot better but this game does the Assassin's Creed formula a lot better. This isn't a walk in the park.

Id does do some strange things with the lore though but I hope it will all fit in the end. I've played about 5 hours.

LOL, I'll never understand publishers.

EDIT
Might not be WB's fault though: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/ngk4v1

This was great at the beginning, but after couple of hours it all went boring and repetative. Especially story. But for Lotr fans might be the best storytelling evah.
Nice action game still, nuff said. 7/10

I'll take that as a positive because I haven't played a game as horrible & boring as AC3 in many years or as poorly written/designed.

Ticks the "fun" checkboxes for me:

  • Videogame that doesn't pretend it's not a videogame for a fake sense of "immersion"
  • The world is designed entirely around your abilities
  • Challenging
  • Objectives and quests are very barebones

It sounds like the perfect sandbox I can't really find much to complain... maybe I will after I've played it.

EDIT: That isn't to say that the opposites are BAD things but like I said it seems like a total sandbox game a la they give you all the tools and that's it, now you do what you have to and create your own dynamic gameplay.

This game is very good at showing the ugly and depressing parts of Middle Earth while completely ignoring what makes it beautiful. Even Nurnen is depressing.

So I've finished it. I don't really like all the changes to the lore or the overall atmosphere. The story is also pretty bland but as a game it works wonderfully. It's very fun.

I'd give it an 8.

Wait until it comes down in price then? That's what I was thinking.

The story is just...uninteresting.

It's a fun game to play...ONCE and that's it. Finished it in 17 hours with 78% complete. The last 22% is just finding stuff in the world and not missions.

The collectibles in this game are pretty interesting, Normally I despise picking up "lore objects" but I really like picking them and listening to their stories because they give more background information about the world.

I do have to agree about the story though...

Say what exactly? There aren't multiple difficulties and the game is better for it.

The Witcher could learn a thing or two about combat from this game.

I don't want Arkam combat everywhere. Besides it looks incredibly easy. And when this is the whole game content, I would think it becomes boring fast. Besides the story apparently isn't that interesting and also does weird things with the lore, which irks me. Definitely not a game for me. Though I must agree the idea of the ranking system for the orks is intriguing, though I feel execution is a bit too gamified. But I guess, I was wishing for too much, when I hoped for actual politics in the orcs ranks.

I was wondering because you usually play on the highest difficulty. 17h on the "highest difficulty" level wasn't worth 50€ in my book.

However, I've seen the Nemesis system "in action" and it looked more interesting than I thought. In fact, it reminds me of how storytelling works in XCOM: your soldiers are yours and what happened to them is what shapes your unique story (I remember Lee, my best soldier in XCOM, pretty well, as any other fully written character). I could see the same thing with orcs while they rank up when they kill you -- I don't know how it felt in the long run though.

The problem with the nemesis system is that it relies too much on you dying/speeding time to work well if you don't do those 2.

They already did. It was called Arkham Asylum.
