Minimum FPS to Enjoy

If I can get about 30 FPS in the Demo (much of Act 1) @ 1920x1200, will I be ok for the rest of the game or is ACT 1 pretty light? At a higher resolution, I was in the teens and that was choppy, but the drops into 20s weren't really all that bad for 19x12. (this was all measured using FRAPs).

It tends to drop off with exception of the last two acts really.Try playing under a smaller resolution or with less intensive graphic settings.

So, the last two acts are a little more demanding? Well, perhaps I'll wait to play until my hardware and I can enjoy it. I've already pre-ordered the EE from amazon, but I'll just not open it until the HD4870x2 comes down to $200. See you in 2009, heh. At least I'll have a shorter wait for the witcher 2.

No, Act II and III are more demanding. IV and V are alright. Epilogue is I think easier than Act I on your fps.As I said, reduce your graphic settings and you can still enjoy the game very well.

I'd say lower the resulution and the FPS should go up. Also Fraps is known to take about 10% - 20% of FPS "away", as it is slowing down the computer (a least thats how I understood it :D).

I don't notice FRAPS doing any real 'slowing down of the computer' unless one is using it to capture the action. If all I do is run FRAPS to show FPS, I really don't notice a difference between having it active and unactive. But, as soon as I do a video capture, things will and do run at a lower framerate. Also, at 1280x1024 with High Settings, 16x Aniso, Depth of View Off, and VSync ON, I get between 60-80 FPS. I honestly don't see any need to run the game above that unless one is just looking for 'bragging rights'. ;)

After experimenting, I got 2560x1600 to give me about 35-40fps in chapter 1 everywhere with the rare dip into the mid-20s. I turn AA off and put shadows to medium. It feels really good. Everything else is high. The shadows and AA were really putting a hit on my less than stellar PC.The reason I didn't want to go lower is that anything below my default res doesn't look good scaled on my lcd. Therefore, I have to play letterbox, which kind of stinks. My comp: 2gb ram, dual core 1.8ghz, hd 3870 512mb, crappy everything else.

That does make a big difference for sure! So, I now completely understand your reasoning.I've also found...and posted a note about it...that having AA enabled at all causes some weird affects. Building windows become invisible...you can see through them to the sky or other buildings and lighted torches and other lights show through walls, etc. So, having AA off makes things much more natural looking...to me...on my rig.

Good news for the AA. Thanks again. I'm so excited for my amazon.com preorder to arrive.

Hmm... I have an 8800GTS 320MB, AMD 2.0GHz dual core (3800+), 2 GB RAM. It's very good for the Witcher @ 1680x1050 except in Act 3, where everyone without a megasystem has problems that are not video card related. I've heard that this will be fixed in the enhanced edition (CONFIRMATION, Anyone?) So I think you will find the game fun and playable.

but it's video card related since you're playing at that resolutionif you look at my post here you'll see that you already use 250Mb of your video card memory at 1600x1200, more so at 1680x1050, even more so if you enable 2xAA every bit of memory over your cards 320Mb will be taken from your system, meaning that the video card will wait for memory from the "slower" RAMChapter 3 is way bigger than any zone from the previous chapters, if you keep you settings unchanged performance will be lower, the game is not broken, just that the other chapters where lighter is resource needs
