Misleading/harmful Intel Graphics driver update prompt in Cyberpunk 2077 that caused system failure

+
I am writing regarding an issue caused by a warning that appeared in **Cyberpunk 2077** (in the game's launcher/announcement window): *"Your Intel graphics driver is out of date. To ensure the best experience, install the latest drivers (grab them here)."*

Following this recommendation, I clicked the link provided in the game and downloaded the suggested Intel Graphics driver. After installation and restart, the laptop stopped displaying any image (completely black screen after POST), and Windows effectively became unusable in normal boot mode.

To resolve the issue, I had to:
- force-restart the laptop three times to reach the Windows Recovery Environment;
- boot into Safe Mode and manually uninstall the installed display driver via Device Manager;
- create a System Restore Point as a precaution;
- after a second attempt to update the driver (this time through Windows Update), encounter the same black screen issue again;
- finally find and install the correct Intel VGA Driver directly from the laptop manufacturer's official website (Lenovo), which resolved the problem.

The entire recovery process took a significant amount of time and involved a real risk of data loss and system failure.

**The core of the complaint:**

1. The in-game warning does not point to a source or driver version specific to the laptop manufacturer and model, but instead links to a generic download, which is inappropriate for laptops with manufacturer-optimized (OEM) drivers pre-installed.
2. Such pop-up notifications inside the game create the impression of an official and safe recommendation, while in fact they can conflict with drivers installed by the hardware manufacturer and render the system unusable.
3. The game does not warn users about the potential risks (incompatibility with the OEM build, the need to create a restore point, etc.) before directing them to download the driver.

That sounds very annoying, indeed.

I just forwarded your complaint but to make sure you can also use this link to send it to support: https://support.cdprojektred.com/en/cyberpunk/pc/gameplay/issue/1736/contact-to-support

But yeah, it's best to never rely on driver download links from other sources and always make sure you have the right driver. Also, if the game runs fine, I would just ignore the request to update drivers, because even if it's the right link it's not always necessarily going to be as stable.
