Missing Icons

Missing Icons

Hello everyone,

I recently installed patch 1.3 for The Witcher 2, but it still has some issues with missing icons during the minigames.
Especially dice poker suffers from this, for sometimes it becomes unplayable, since it doesn't seem to recognize any input device any longer.

So for instance:

You use an Xbox 360 controller, and you start the dice poker game. You can place your bets, your opponent raises the bet, and then you miss the icons telling you that A means accept, and B means quit.
Then the game stops responding to all input you can do on the controller.
Meaning that its also impossible to switch back to keyboard and mouse.
Then all thats left is killing the application the hard way, which is a shame.

Do more people encounter this problem, and is CDproject Red aware of this ?

More people have encountered this problem, enough so that I'd be fairly certain that CDPR had heard of it by now.

I have that kind of problem, but it doesn't bother me. Just load your last quicksave, and problem will gone.

Do you also have a controller attached ?

I'm having the problem of disappearing icons playing with mouse/keyboard. As Spout said, I can still click the text-less buttons.

I haven't been playing since 1.3 was released, though, so I don't know if anything changed about the frequence or consequences of that bug.

I play on PC with an Xbox controller and have the same problem with missing icons. Sometimes it works, sometimes I don't see the icons, but can click and continue, and sometimes I can't click anything and have to CTRL-ALT-DEL to close the game and restart.

I have the problem with the missing icons too.

Another problem I have is that the first ballista in chapter 1 does not aim with the mouse. Only keyboard.

before patching the game, remove all mods completely. all. I had this problem too and my only fix was to reinstall the game, and patch in order.

After that, everything worked fine.

I never installed any mods whatsoever. This problem happens on the clean install of the game, patched in the following order : Patch 0->Patch 1.1->Patch 1.2->Patch 1.3

Where did you get patch 0 ? I need it also to patch my retail game manually.
You need patch 0 only if you want to manually update to 1.1 or 1.2, the autoupdate should work ok
all the patches including patch 0 ( New install patcher ): http://www.gamepron.com/title/6511/The-Witcher-2-Assassins-of-Kings/files/Patches/

The zero day patch is not needed for anything anymore and never was since the patch 1.1.
If you want to manually update to 1.1 for some reason go straight to point 2.(!!!) here: http://en.thewitcher.com/patch/ . If you want to manually update further, to 1.2 after applying patch 1.1 apply 1.2 from here: http://en.thewitcher.com/patch1-2/

About the disappearing icons: this issue is usually connected to memory shortages and fixes from point 24. in our FAQ apply: http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/22348-technical-faq/

About the loss of input: This issue also can be connected to memory problems (see above) as well as to unstable overclocks of CPUs and GPUs. Restoring default clocks is recommended. Having DDR 3 RAM(rather than DDR 2) is preferable.

@ vinthir, in regards to missing icons and loss of input can you tell me why it works perfectly fine with Patch 1.2 and not 1.3 if memory is the issue which i know for a fact it is not, i have 4GB of DDR3 ram running at 1333mhz not overlcocked I also have the Nvidia GTX 460 1GB again not overclocked, so memory is no issue for me yet with patch 1.3 i have the missing icons and input issues ( with gamepad) yet didn't have that problem with patch 1.2 and below so to me the problem clearly points to the 1.3 patch as to the cause.

I cannot have a closer look at your system so I cannot say. I said "usually" because I wouldn't dare to write "always". Too many possible combinations of soft- and hardware on the PC platform.
If we stick to the memory theory though then we should also take into account the screen resolution and the version of Windows (which? 32- or 64-bit?).

My guess would be that:
1. Since 1.3 the black letter-box disappeared for those with resolutions different than 16:9. Since there is a full screen of pixels to process now, problems with memory, crashes, disappearing icons etc may follow. It effectively works like increasing resolution.

2. It's possible that since eg. June till 1.3 release one could gather quite a lot of saves. A large number of saves decreases performance. Removing the unneeded ones regularly is a good idea.

I have 4 GB DRR3 ram on my pc and it's running at stock speeds. My graphics card is a mobility radeon hd4650 with 1 GB of GDDR3 ram, again running at stock speeds and fully updated drivers. I run the game on windows 7 x64.

As mentioned before, I didn't get the missing icons problem until I installed patch 1.3. I also don't get the problem when I run the game at 1366*768(native resolution of my screen) at low settings, but I do get it when I run it at 800*480 on max. I believe this might be a problem due to the new resolution fix.

EDIT: I also would like to mention that I performed a clean install of the game and removed all the previous saves.

My problem is this. I just started using ds3 with the 360 emulator. Until today I have only played with keyboard and mouse. Dice poker sometimes does have a lack of icons, which, while annoying, doesn't break the game in any way. You simply click on the blank spot and continue on. MY big problem is that while using my controller every time I play dice poker the game essentially freezes. I can select the different die that I would like to re roll, but I can't actually re roll them. No input.

Well I get these issues and my system isn't overclocked in any way.

I have 4 GB's of DDR3 ram, and on top of that my GPU is an NVidia X280 which has 1 gb on board. Apart from that, it only seems to happen during the prologue and the first bits of act 1. :)
