I think one of the things that will be done quite often is that if you take one enemy type, say a Nekker, then you'll see things like Nekker Warriors, Nekker Kings, etc. to lower the count of truly unique species of enemies. IMO, I'd say the game will have about 35 base variant enemy archetypes.

I hope there is a good chance that, as monster hunters, we will need to address different enemy types with different tactics. Lore about those enemies may prove helpful in knowing the best way to take the enemy on.

If you're talking about what Mamais said regarding the monster count, I wouldn't take his word for it...He's not particularly good when it comes to details, and often contradicts other statements made by CDPR staff. He's a pot head, it's to be expected.. (he's not, but acts like one) ;)

If a major part of the game is to find stuff (including monsters and NPCs) then I really hope they implement a roaming system. I'm thinking about replay value here.

I like! But you could have made it better and added a spliff in his hand... I'm disappointed, Emperor!

Okay, this is slowly getting close to creepy, makes-people-quit-their-jobs kind of territory. Get back on topic.

Oh, Reptile ! What a coincidence.
I err... I was... about to get back on topic, just when you came here.

*cough*

So, we know that roughly 80 monsters will be in the game.

But the sheer amount of monster types isn't really what matters - the design of each individual enemy is.
There are a ton of games which work well with only a handful of enemy types.

Why is that ?
I think it is because those types are so different from each other that they manage to challenge
the player to use their full spectrum of skills to defeat them.

So I'd rather have quality instead of quantity, each monster should be a challenge in itself
and require a different approach, so we feel accomplishment when defeating it~

As a point of reference, according to the FCR manual which has lists of the monster types as used in W1, there were 62 "monsters", plus 101 "NPCs" as friend/foes (plus the fist-fighters). Of these some were "near-duplicates", but it is obvious that "80 monsters" cannot include NPC humans.

It does seem likely that as with the first game Drowner and Drowned Dead might be different monsters for example, but they are different ~ at a certain point in the game, Drowners were easy meat, but Drowned Dead were dangerous still, and the similar reasoning can be applied to Wyvern/Royal Wyvern.

However, it might also be that monster types, as with 'end states' are amalgams ~ the 36 end states have been confirmed several times, but also a note that "we stopped counting minor state changes once we got to over 300" to paraphrase the comment.

There are many vampire species in the game lore, so I presume we will face some of them.

How many monsters were in W2 and W1? Because even if the 80 monsters has some variations in the mix I think that number still destroys the previous 2 games.

Why is that important? Monsters in the witcher world are special and rather rare...

I for once hope that there also will be "normal" animals like deer, boars, rabbits, foxes and stuff. Real monsters should only be met on rare occasions.
