More linear please!

Am I the only one who does not like open-ended games like Skyrim and Oblivion? I prefer playing The Witcher and Vampire the Mascarade: Bloodlines instead. What I fear here is those gamers who prefer open-ended games want to ruin great games like The Witcher, and turn it into something else, by keeping on suggesting on those threads to make the game like Skyrim. Heck even Cyberpunk 2077, while it does sounds like an interesting game, it seems the pressure here is turning the game in open-ended game too.

I think, considering the amount of gamers who prefer open-ended gamers and keep making such suggestions here, that it'd be nice to show the devs that, no, not all gamers like and play open-ended games, in fact many don't play them at all. In other words, more the devs turn their games into open-ended games, more they alienate and lose the gamers like me who can't stand such games.

If The Witcher would have been open-ended, I would have never bought it, same for the second. Seems to me The Witcher serie is therefore NOT open-ended, and should keep things that way. I don't go on open-ended games boards and demand from the devs to turn their games into linear ones, I content myself with not buying their games.

Can I check what you mean by "open-ended"? Are you talking about games that keep going after the main quest has finished, or games in an open world?

The topic's likely to cause some debate, so I just want to be sure we're all on the same page :)

When I say open-ended I mean games like Skyrim and Oblivion.

I suggest you specify what you dont like about games that have an open world or what do you think The Witcher will loose while having a connectected open world (other than artificial break points, loading screens and chapters)

Open-ended and open-world are two separate things. However I do believe the OP means open-world. Both linear and open-world games have their pluses and minuses, it comes down to a matter of personal taste as to whether or not the pluses out weigh the minuses for you in one or the other style. Personally I won't categorically say that I won't buy a game because of either style, for me much of it comes down to how well the game plays. A bad game is a bad game regardless of it being linear or open-world.

While I don't dislike well-made open world games, I love The Witcher games for what they are: story-driven games. And I wish they stayed this way because I want more of the same, just better. And I'll never call TW2 a linear game. It has the most non-linear plot in any computer games ever created. More than that, TW1 is way simpler (though longer) game than TW2 and it's better. Why? Because TW1 was made by fans of the Witcher, and TW2 was made by talented professionals. They should have finished The Witcher trilogy as story-driven and made another open world game in the same universe.

I've been talking about The Witcher 3 on another forums, and another fan who does not like open-ended games like Skyrim, is also worried about how the serie, and The Witcher 3, is turning into.

Why do you keep insisting on comparing them to the Skyrim team? They don't even have the same mentality when it comes to story and other things. I don't like Skyrim either but that doesn't mean i'm going to start hating on ALL open world games. Gothic 1 & 2 succeded in making a good story and believable world and they're also in the open world category.

It's not about comparing to Skyrim (btw, it's the dev team themselves compare TW3 to Skyrim), it's about expecting to eat pizza and getting noodles instead. Noodles might be good but you want pizza. ;)

I like both kind of games, and although I prefer more linear RPGs in cases like this, I've never seen what this guys could do with that kind of liberty. CD Projekt has already surprised me with two bold, brilliant, and beautiful rpg games, and that's more than enough for me to trust in their decisions.

i wouldnt mind an open world game but i just hope it doesnt have the same repetitive quests like skyrim ... even the contracts of monsters in witcher were better than skyrims side quests ... atleast it was not like kill 20 nekkers and theyll stop respawning ...

im sure these guys know what theyre doing and they know what there fans want ... ill wait for them give out some more details before passing any judgement, but i feel you ... open world witcher took me by surprise as well...

What if you get Pizza AND noodles? Even if you're not in the mood for the noodles, you can still eat your pizza.

If they can keep with the same level of storytelling and strong plotlines as they did with both Witcher games then I have no fear that CDPR will deliver an outstanding game . I know there are fears that it will be otherwise . But i`ll take a wait and see approach until we get more information .

And that's what CDPR wants to do. Give you more food than you ever ate.

We have some misunderstanding here. You hate nonlinear games like witcher2, sandbox games like skyrim, minecraft or open world games like gothic?

Linear - nonlinear means nonlinear or linear story
sandbox - non-sandbox describes what you do in game (in sandbox games you just having fun doing all kinds of stuff)
open world - non-open world describes your ability to go wherever you want in the game world

Skyrim:
linear sandbox open world

witcher and witcher 2
nonlinear non-sandbox non-open world

Gothic1,2 risen:
linear non-sandbox open world

Witcher 3 supposed to be:
nonlinear non-sandbox open world

Come to think of it gothic was quite story driven game, sure there was tons of sidequests but you always was focused on your main quest and progress in story. Ofcourse piranha doesn't have good writers so the story wasn't all that good but it wasn't world that disturbed story. Cdpr said themselves that witcher 3 will have regions with separate stories so mabe they do something similar to gothic 2 with khorinis - main region, mining colony, yarkendar. Gothic games also doesn't have level scaling so that's great.

I believe Witcher series would be considered semi-open world. As it has few smaller open areas separated by chapters , quite a lot like Gothic 2 , just on a smaller scale.

Nope, it's not even semi-open. Maybe TW1, but even calling TW1 semi-open world is far fetched.
