Mount and Blade: Fire and sword is the future of RPG gaming.

Graphics are utter crap, but I bought it and I have to say
Mount and blade has it right.. You have:

-Dynamic economy
-Several playstyle available.trader, bandit, military man, etc.
-Shifting political alliances
-destructible cities
-the PC is an equal to the NPCs
-As such, combat is merciless. One shot, one kill with the musket in general.

Everything that I`d like to see in an next-gen RPG (and heaven willing,CP2077). Basically, a huge sandbox.

I do believe that in the future, game categories will (hopefully) converge more and more as in Arma, Mount and Blade, etc.

It is just too bad that AAA games are stuck in that dynamic of SKYRIM.or GTA.

Anyone else play it?

I`m just beginning, I have about 45 people army and I am pillaging polish villages.

I tried it. I think it was Fire and Sword?

It has admittedly all these things you talk about and yet, I couldn't get into it.

Apparently there is a Warhammer mod for it. Maybe later.

Since when is Mount and Blade an RPG, except in it's advertising campaign?
It's an Action Game.

I tried Mount and Blade recently (free temporary access via Steam) and quickly determined that for me it was unplayable due to the FPS aspects of combat.
There's a very thin story-line to give you something of a reason to go from place to place killing stuff but 99%+ of the game is just killing stuff.

It requires too much time getting good at it while not being fun at all. I guess multiplayer in an organized battalion with voice chat is very fun but in the end it's just hack and slash.
If I'm gonna waste may time on random online killing it will only be for the glory of the Emperor (yes I bought founder's pack for Eternal Crusade) :)

Personally I just don't get melee system, you move mouse to swing but at the same time it rotates the body too so you are swerving non stop while trying to swing. It's ridiculous. Also for the life of me I can't grasp how to hit anything with a lance while mounted :)
Granted using firearms is much easier and deadlier.

Had much more fun with Iron Europe - WW1 mod for M&B W:Napoleonic Wars

It's all about hitting a small target area while in motion and split-second precision on the button.
I know HOW it's done, but I'm no where near coordinated enough to actually do it.

Well, it is an action-RPG-stratagy game when you think about it..

Mount and Blade: Warband was great.. It kept me playing for WEEKS!! And thats not an easy task, let me tell you.. It was all about politics, companions, taking over castles, getting a massive army ready and establishing your own kingdom.. It gets good as you progress..

Thewarsend is right:

To focus solely on the combat is myopic. The shifting politics is truly where it`s at. I cannot speak for Warband, but the best way to do combat in Fire and Sword is to actually act as a company commander, not as a Ramboish figure. That`s because guns can kill in one or two shots.

I'd wager we will see more of these blends of action/RPG/Sim/strategy games in the future.

mount and blade games peaked years ago, as an rpg, it's barely functioning, the economy and politics simulation are really basic and superficial.

no offense where you come off calling it the future? 2008 called, it wants its game back.

I suspect my inability to actually perform combat colored my opinion since I didn't play it for long.
I suppose later the alliances and such would add quite a bit to the game, but all I experienced we running around with about 20-25 troops trying to avoid any battle where I didn't outnumber the opposition and leveling my troops up but barely breaking even on paying them with the loot acquired.

True, but even then it stands above its peers. I think the only game which would beat MnB in terms of econ and politics would be dedicated simulations and MMOs like EvE Online.

The last action game which attempted something like this was to my knowledge Freelancer --- and the economy was well, simply static and so were the politics.

I think the only game which got the economy right was Capitalism II (and even then some things were unrealistic, e.g. the stock market),

Every game where politics were involved were, too, a gross oversimplification.

I would be overjoyed if the Chicago School would assist in modelling the in-game economy of say CP2077, but I'm not holding my breath,

Interesting idea. I wonder if CDPR is considering such outside help?

Creating distopian dysfunctional economic model would be right up in their alley as all of their neo liberal crap is crumbling right before our eyes.

Ah-ah! See that line about "things we tread carefully around"? That line over there? The one where words like "liberal" "neo" "conservative" "right-wing" "left wing" are so prominently displayed?

Yes, that's the one.

You just tiptoed onto it. Please eaaaaase carefully away lest something rupture.

We are, within limits, permitted to discuss politics on these forums but ONLY in a civil manner, ONLY with emotions and prejudices FIRMLY in check and ONLY when it relates to Cyberpunk and cyberpunk setting causes/effects/etc. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN.

Not to worry - if anyone goes too far, I'll delete, ban, reban, dance, sing a song, perhaps offer tea, some more deletions, (I love those) and, if really bored, completely re-edit everything that poster ever said so it looks like they have exactly the opposite viewpoint on everything. Even bunnies.

Yes. Because not only are we unfair, not only are we cruelly funny, BUT, we are also thorough.

Mmmm.

Sard edit: Off topic! Edited! Heh heh heh heh. I am a golden GOD!

227 says:
*Don't ban me. I'm kidding! I love you all. With fire and brimstone, but love is love and nobody loves you all as hard or as frequently as I do.

Sard says:

I left this in because ironic. Also sexual. And had to do with mounting.

I agree with 227. Mount and Blade is an okay game.

I need more structure in my world to have fun in a RPG. I need some kind of GM, some kind of plotline, rather than me running around with the freedom to...be bored out of my skull.

Lots of M+B mechanics are cool, though. Just insert them into a game like Deus Ex or the Witcher or...Cyberpunk?

Speaking of M&B, where do you even start? It's on my list of "confusing series with no obvious starting point" with Disciples 3, The Guild 2, and a few others. Do you start with the fire one? The one without a colon? The Warband one? Are they upgrades of the same basic game, or is there some kind of narrative continuity between the games? Is it truly so hard for developers to affix a number to games so as to differentiate actual sequels from remakes and relatively minor upgrades? Seriously.

Oooh, the Guild 2. Supposed to be excellent, but I could never.quite.get into it. http://www.theguild2.com/

Like Mount and Blade, it's almost, well, it is too free. I want stimuli! Other than mere survival. I want story and a role to play against, not just within.

Same here, usually, though I figure it might be enjoyable if I go into it expecting something Simcity-esque or along the lines of Rollercoaster tycoon. There's just no way of telling where to actually start. I picked up the gold or platinum or whatever package that has The Guild 2, Renaissance, Venice, and Pirates. I read somewhere that Venice has all of the content that the others do and more, but lacks an actual tutorial... so it's best to install TG2, go through the tutorial, uninstall it, then play through Venice? Talk about a mess.

EDIT: Or was it Renaissance that had all of the content of the other stuff? Agh, confusing. Either way, they didn't do themselves any favors. What's the point of the different add-ons if later ones render earlier ones completely meaningless?

It's...organic!

There are a lot of quite-deep strat games that fall into that category for me. Apparently solid series but between addons and sequels, I never know where to start.

Partly I keep hoping for a new version of whatever series that has the best of everything plus modern bells and whistles. This applies to quite a few games, really - MnB, ArmA, some medieval strat game a friend bugs me about...

Give me the best and modernized, too. Of course, when ArmA 3 did come out, I was like, "Meh...I can wait for the expansion."
