Mouse and keyboad vs controller in TW2

Hello pals!Waiting for the moment TW2 hits the markets, I wonder if you could help me with a doubt. I’m a casual RPG PC gamer with little experience in console game. Last years I have played Bioware games (Mass Effect 1&2, Dragon Age1&2) and some old classics (Baldur’s and other turn-based ones) and of course TW1. All mouse and keyboard games. As you know, TW2 support mouse/keyboard and controller. Now, before TW2, I’m thinking if buying a controller would be a good idea, although I don’t use one since Megadrive times (only the oldies will remember this). I imagine the experience of gaming TW2 close to ME2, which I play with M&K than to any convencional controller/console game, but maybe a bit more shoot’em’up-ed. Anyway I would like to know your opinion. Are you going to use mouse and keyboard or controller to play TW2? With my background in mind, what would you advise me to do? Do I buy the controller? Any specific model/brand?Thank you!

I'm pretty sure the only controller supported is the xbox360 controller, so you should go with this one. It's very difficult to know how the game will play with a gamepad, but with what I've seen so far I think combat and movement will play best with a gamepad, and inventory management is going to be better with a mouse but I can't know for sure since I didn't play the game. I already have an xbox360 controller so I'm gonna try TW2 with it, but I'm not sure I would buy one just to try...Hope that helps

It also depends on whether or not the radial menu annoys you or not. If you don't use a gamepad then there is no need for the radial menu. You simply press the appropriate key for whatever action you wish to perform. I think I'd prefer this method as opposed to having to pull up a menu every time I wanted to switch spells or swords. I don't like things that break immersion and interrupt combat.

Thank you! Your guess is exactly the opinion of Gop in this Q&A session: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiPfY7jLPXY Again, not sure what to do. I suposse is not possible to have both systems simultaneously and only get the pad for the combats, isn't it?

Yeah, I knew that. But I am a man of tactic pauses. I pause a lot in Dragon Age games, for example. During exploration I manage my characters with keyboard and the camera-over-the-shoulder, it's more immersive to me. But in combat, I pause and go to a more wide camera, and use the mouse to attack. In TW2, I wonder if a pad would be more precise to direct the attacks, dodge, etc... because I think I'm going to pause (ok, semi-pause) a lot. Thanks for your opinion, anyway!

Hmm, in that case I'd say use a controller. It's probably more comfortable than using a mouse and keyboard for extended periods of time anyways. But as far as being able to use both simultaneously, well, I've played games where if you switch to one control type then the other is disabled. I've also played games where you could use many controller types simultaneously (mouse, keyboard, joystick, etc.). I think a dev would have to answer if this is possible or not.

Which pad do you use, Sweeper? I'm having a look and is a new word for me...

I got myself a gamepad years ago because I'm horrible with the WASD movement, I avoid it like the plague (use left mouse to run whenever possible). And running around is much smoother with a controller, the speed changes from walk to run seamlessly. And I often wished to be able to use the controller with Witcher, because the M/K usage gave me a lot of pain from bad posture. But I never got it to work properly.I'm glad that TW2 will support controller, even if only the crippled XBoX thing, where they forgot that people are symmetrical and misplaced the left analog stick, so you always have to hold it skewed and the advantage of better posture is moot again. ;)I hope for two things:1. Vibration. I think it's great for the immersion if you have physical feedback. But it's always optional if you don't like it.2. NO locking of the other option, because using the controller plus hotkeys is just perfect.I wouldn't count on it that they support anything other than the XBoX360 controller, so if you're gonna buy a new one for TW2, you problably should buy this one (even though I find it atrocious, but that's just me). Or wait with the purchase until May 17th - I still have my good old Logitech Rumblepad 2 and will try it out.

Thanks, useful info. So, are you able to use pad and keyboard at the same time? Wow, I have never thought that would be a comfy way to play. I was planning (if possible) exploring in cities/non-hostile places with mouse and keyboard and fighting with pad.

Well i'm going to use the keyboard&mouse, one because i don't have a controller ^^ and the most import one is that i prefer the hotkey. But the controll has its uses, expecially since the game uses one button for strong atk and other for fast atk, plus the dodge, dash, parrying/counter. If you play the AC2 brotherhood( not comparing or thinking it should be alike) you would know how much easy is with the controller and how painfull is with the keyboard.(also remember that the game is pc exclusve so those things should be minimized)Fast response/ more action oriented choose the controller.after re reading the post i came with a conclusion that isn't much of a help, sorry ^^

Of course it was useful, man! Thanks for your opinion. The more I read about the issue, the more I foresee that probably both options will work fine. A matter of taste. So probably I will buy the x360 pad and give it a try.

Well, I hope they will allow for it. Because I experienced some games where controller was generally fine, but one or two options were just not working, like "what were they thinking"?But for example Two Worlds II is completely rubbish: if you have a controller plugged in, you can't even start the game, because M/K are blocked and it is not possible to use the menus with the controller. Epic fail, if you ask me. And the support had no idea about it, in the end I told THEM what they should tell other desperate customers who weren't able to play the game...On the other hand, I have a little more faith in CDPR that they get it right with the controller. But the option to use both without plugging and unplugging the controller would still be nice. :)

I used an xbox360 controller before and i wasn't really good with it. Tried it at my friend's house. It may takes time to master it especially with shooters.I still prefer old keyboard and mouse though..

I have difficulties too with the xbox360 controller for shooters, but it's far more handy for action games like Assassin's creed or Batman: AA. Personally I think I will use a controller for TW2 but I will switch to mouse for inventory management (if it's possible without unplugging the controller)

Exactly! Gop pointed to Batman: AA as one of the inspiration sources for the combat system. I have asked to de devs in the corrresponding thread if would be possible to play whit M&KB and pad simultaneously, so i'll keep my fingers crossed.

My hand(s) are likely to get sore from playing a game as lengthy as TW2 if I use the keyboard and mouse to play. I definitely intend to use the 360 controller.

i've got both a 360 controller for windows as well as my traditional KBAM setup. i'll try both. i usually like thumbsticks for overworld movement and such, but if the game involves shooting or aiming AT ALL, i prefer the accuracy and precision of a mouse.i don't have any issue with TW1's KBAM controls, so i doubt i'll find them problematic in TW2.

As antho009 pointed out it hard to tell with a game pad I have all 3 so will try each out and see what works best for me but then I'm old school so my fist pick will be KB&Mhow ever with action game find the controller works better because I like stringing combos together oh almost forgot I still have my old Megadrive lol
