In discussing best one-shot action sequences, it's pretty much a sin not to mention the incredible Tony Jaa:

"Put the glasses on! Put em' on!"

Only thing that measures up to this is the Oldboy hallway scene.

Saw "Ex Machina" today and I was impressed. Definitely recommend it to all sci-fi lovers.

It's quite minimalistic, subtle in style. Especially the allegories - you can see them if you look closely, but they are very well integrated into the plot, cinematography and message. They aren't overpowering.

Great performance from the trio, especially Oscar Issac as Nathan and Alicia Vikander as Ava.
Yet again, subtlety was key here.

Amazingly shot, with pure, minimalistic approach - reminded me of the old sci-fi films like 2001. Even uses similar color schemes.
Everything just worked, from the music to plot, from the choice of actors to the cinematography.

I foresee a great future for Alex Garland, which made his director's debut with this movie.
If you liked films like "Moon", you will surely like this one.

Watched Planetes. Great animation, great characters and a well crafted story. One of my favorite anime series to date.

Can't recommend it enough. :)

Whiplash is pretty dark for a movie about music. The devil is in the details in this one. I really enjoyed it, I imagine anyone who likes jazz and drums will enjoy it even more than I did.

Man Game of Thrones is straying so far from the 4th and 5th ASoIaF books now. I'm not sure how much I like it anymore. I mean I get why they are making some choices, because changing some stories makes sense. Changing Brienne's arch, major plus. But other parts just don't make sense to me at all.

Jamie going to Dorne on a rescue mission? Killing Barristen AND giving Jorah greyscale (I would have been okay with either... but BOTH)? Stannis leaving with Davos, Melisandre, Shireen and his wife instead of splitting up? Jon going North of the Wall with Tormund? Sansa with the Boltan's? Come on man ... this is getting a little crazy here.

I'm still gonna watch, but this is becoming my least favorite season.

Well, the last two books had hell a lot of NOTHING for major characters, and you can't make a good TV out of it. As they said GRRM told them all characters' story arcs. Now the creators of the show just need to adjust for a much quicker pace. Personally, I have nothing to complain about. At last something is really happening, the characters get real challenges, all fluff is removed, and the story is moving forward. Given that I pretty much doubt we'll get the last two (or three, GRRM is not sure even about the number) book, I am all for TV show providing a complete story and a real conclusion to ASOIAF.

Figured one or two people around here might enjoy this as well:

THE ANGEL HAS RETURNED...

Thirty-five years ago, a legend was born...

As viewers sat down to watch ‘Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back’ in 1980, they were shown a short film. It was so mysterious and dark that many never forgot it. Its name was Black Angel.

The project began when Roger Christian, Art Director on ‘Episode IV: A New Hope’, was given the green light by George Lucas to turn his fantasy script into a short film. Having spent years designing droids and space stations, he now set about creating a medieval fantasy world, the likes of which the world had never seen before. Check out the original poster on the right, by artist Mark Raats.

But then it was lost. For decades, it was thought the film had gone the way of Han Solo, frozen in time. But then, in 2011, a negative was discovered by complete chance, and painstakingly restored frame by frame. The legend has been brought back to life, and it's available for you to watch on YouTube today.

Who is Roger Christian?

Roger Christian shot to fame when he won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. By the age of 34, he'd already created R2D2, the lightsaber and an entire arsenal of interstellar weaponry.

Black Angel was his directorial debut, as he teamed up with cinematographer Roger Pratt to create a stunning visual spectacle. His retelling of the classical hero's journey, set in a mythical evironment, has influenced a great many films, including John Boorman's Excalibur, and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

He is also known for his work as Art Director on Alien, which earned him another Academy Award nomination.

Working on Star Wars

Working with a shoestring budget, Christian helped create some of Star Wars' most memorable scenes.

In 1977, the battered look of the rebel spacecraft was a completely new idea, and a radical departure from the shiny perfection of previous sci-fi interiors. In an interview with shadowlocked.com, he recalled creating the Millennium Falcon: "It's like you own a car... you buy it second-hand and you keep repairing it and fixing things and it gets dented... and in the end that's how it is."

Christian details how he made the very first R2D2, as well as hundreds of Star Wars weapons, in his book Cinema Alchemist, a must-read for Star Wars fans. The book also contains rare insights into his work on Alien and Black Angel.

So Mad Max was so good. George Miller has comes such a way from the originals, but he did an excellent job of keeping it true to the series. The music, cinematography, and the vehicle and character designs were just so imaginative. Plus except for some parts in the beginning a one halfway point, the action just kept going and going. If you like action movies at all, you really should see it.

Pitch Perfect 2 was ok. Not as good as the original and the first half fell pretty flat (hah, pun not intended), but the second picked it up and there were some pretty funny moments. Green Bay Packers as an acapella group? Hilarious. And Hana Mae Lee as Lilly? The crazy things she says are always awesome.
