I do believe the satirical advertising, that in my view were central to the overall impact of the original Robocop, didn't make it into the reboot.

@~Fandango~; posted the only reviewer I give any credence to, he knows his stuff, and never seems to shirk from constructive criticism when its due, he has attained a respectable position without buttering up the stars...

Too many American movies include the subplot of a boy discovering love / respect for his father. While curious it does no harm, but this trend to reboot everything is wasteful, and tedious, and what does it say about us that 14 years into the new millennium we're still trawling the old for entertainment. Theres almost nothing in this sector that is original, whether the cowardice of the bean counting suits, or a surfeit of entertainment diluting the creative process in individuals, I dont know... but it results in the endless repetition of classics that have been neutered.

The new Robocop may be entertaining, but i'd rather have had something new.

We are watching True Detective on HBO GO, trying to catch up so we can start watching the new episodes. Verdict is still out but initially at least it has enough character and tension to be interesting. Very atmospheric shots of Louisiana locales and a Moody Blues-esque soundtrack. Deals frankly with religion and philosophy, moreso than your usual cop show. Reminds me of Millennium.

Vikings season 2 starts tomorrow!!!

I have to share this, because I'm dying of laughter. There's an upcoming ~horror~ movie set inside of an abandoned prison in Montenegro - Mamula. I've been there twice, tourist boats go there as a part of a tour, you can see the whole place in 10 minutes. While the movie looks like complete and utter trash, it might be worth it for the gorgeous seaside. Also, sexy evil mermaids.

Trejler ? Oh, do I love those loanwords that stand out so much in our Slavic languages hahaha. In Polish we use the word "zwiastun" as a translation for trailer, but more often that not it's just left as "trailer" or "teaser" in their original spelling.

As for the trejler. Holy shit, is that Django ? As in the original one, Franco Nero ? [checks IMDB, is surprised that the movie is even listed there. It is in fact mr. Nero]. The movie looks like a TV production with low-budget and the mermaid looks disturbingly fake... but I would still let her eat me. Some expected "ass shots" to make you develop a strong connection with the female characters [/end sarcasm], not that I'm complaining. Montenegro indeed looks beautiful and I'm glad they're showing it. Never been there, though I had chance to be in vicinity in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The Vikings premiere was pretty good. Didn't feel quite as tightly put together as some past episodes-
the battle scene was sort of thrown in there for drama. However I guess I could see it culturally, they needed a certain amount of bloodshed just for showing up or else Odin would be mad. I'm glad Floki made it, even if they cheesed a little bit by making it seem like he would die.
I like how they continue to highlight cultural differences rather than make the events more palatable to modern tastes.

I was also glad that
Lagertha set off on her own course. I'll miss the family dynamic from last season, but this is what was necessary to set the stage for future events with Ragnar's sons.
Nice, sad little send-off for Gyda. *sniff*

The episode is up on history.com, if you missed it or don't have access to a TV channel.

They were trolling us with Floki.

I suppose Ragnar is going to die this season.

The episode was designed to set up future scenarios, so not spectacular but solid nonetheless. From an acting standpoint, Fimmel finally got to show more range and I thought rose to the occasion. For a while all he did is sneer and grin and it was getting old. Interesting to see how betrayal and conflicts of interest are dealt with. For a second there I thought Ragnar was going to have his cake and eat it too..

...how the hell did I put that smiley up there?

I just finished watching Band of Brothers. To those of you who don't know, it's a 10-episode series by HBO from 2001, following a specific American company ("Easy" company) during WW2, from their days training towards D-Day, to the final surrender of the Japanese.

I've been staring at my text-box for a few minutes, wondering what to write to persuade people to go watch it. Anyone who's ever served in an army will find something to identify with. But Band of Brothers isn't restricted only to an audience of former soldiers. Partly because WW2 is so foreign compared to anything in modern times; mainly because this series is so human in its focus. It's the most authentic depiction of war I've seen on screen - it's not too short for it to miss out on creating an emotional tie, it's not too long to be wearisome. They don't exaggerate on the violence, nor do they sugarcoat it. Things feel just "right", as much as "right" can be said about a 3-year journey through war. But once again, in the center of this series, there are the soldiers of "Easy" company themselves. Not grand tacticians and mighty maneuvers of generals. It's something that I believe everyone can feel even a slight connection with, and indeed I've found that the series manages to convey a shade of the unique feeling expressed in its title.

I highly recommend Band of Brothers, to everyone, really. For all the entertainment value in things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Sherlock, I don't think that any of these magnificent shows manage to create an emotional bond as Band of Brothers does.

Hannibal just came out too, if you haven't picked it up you should, especially if you're a fan of the movies and books.

TNG is one of the best things to ever grace network television.

Incidentally, I've merged that True Detective thread back in here. I think we're all in the habit of posting in this thread anyway.

And did anyone watch Ripper Street when it was on? I heard some rumour that it's been renewed after all.

Matthew and Jared won the Oscars this year both by their amaze-ball performances (for Dallas Buyers Club) and their very nice speeches! I'm not much into these awards but this year it was better in recent years.
Still annoyed gems like Her, Inside Llewyn Davis didn't get much love. Well at least the former got best original screenplay. :)
If you haven't seen these 3 then recommended you do.

And yeah Vikings and Hannibal returned this week. So bloody great!

Love that miniseries. Really good stuff.

Eee, I have to admit True Detective has me hook, line and sinker. I hope they make a good resolution.

I went to watch 300: Rise of an Empire today.

Was very disappointed. I know what to expect but a dumb movie from 300 right? Well if one bothers to look at the subtleties of the original film and see past the visuals one can see the deep story that Frank Miller was trying to tell, and the movie is very faithful to the comic book.

This one? It's a piece of shit. I can't even enjoy the battle sequences because they are dumb and too short.

37 days, a mini-series on the events leading up to the Great War. Finally figured out why I was recognising Lloyd George's voice, it'll nag at you while watching. To be honest I think it's a bit biased and too broad in its characterisation, for instance it portrays Churchill as nearly psychotic in his lust for war, but the acting is very good and the cast top drawer.
