You should definitely watch Doctor Who, Chew. It is a spectacular show, and I would recommend definitely to watch it with the beginning of the 9th Doctor!
Already finished the first season yesterday actually, and I must say I got genuinely surprised by the show.
I really liked how it goes to show that the series focuses quite heavily on combining its underlying themes of tragedy, heroism, and insanity; which correlates by the portrayal of the Doctor as part heroic warrior, part mad scientist and part tragic loner. This complex character (while difficult to portray, Eccleston manages to do it quite well), manages to lend the show a reality which in turn allows a deep connection to the characters.
While I found the overarching plots of the show quite odd at times (even ridiculous), but thanks to the confidence and reality of the actors, combined with the depth of the characters, helped shape and make the plots believable. However, while I generally liked Eccleston's portrayal as the 9th Doctor, I personally didn't find at times that he managed to master any of the intrinsic complexities of the character, which sometimes lead him to be half-formed and often forced.
The companions were 'okayish'. Wasn't really a fan of Rose, mostly by the fact that the character is purposely portrayed as being so completely ordinary that she becomes defined by her growing feelings for The Doctor, followed by how badly she treats her boyfriend and mother, and her idiotic actions in the episode “Father’s Day”. Mickey was just meh. The only one I liked was Barrowman's portrayal of Jack Harkness; he is fun, charming and has a rather good character arc. I must admit, I almost began to question my sexuality every time he was in the picture.
In general I found the first season to be quite good. Other than the facts I stated ealrier, I think the show suffered a bit from the insecurity about the shows future, a large part because of the shows revival, but still think it managed quite well. Watched the first episode of Season 2 and I'm already in love with David Tennant's portayal as the 10th Doctor.
