Like most web-based rpg battle games i've played, it's a game of rock/paper/scissors, but with a bit more complexity and stat numbers and gear.
I've lost a lot too, but eventually you'll start winning a bit once you have the cash and streetcred to upgrade gear. But it's still one-part luck, 3-parts guessing game. xD
You can. Click on the slots in your Character screen.
Maybe it's because I'm on mobile but I can only see the option to upgrade my current gear
