New to this game first impressions

Hi all,

I pre-ordered TW2 and got it from Amazon.com yesterday. I am almost done with ActI and so far its been very hard to get into this game.

I am going to give it a few more hours however I find it rather boring and not very immersing

The flow to the game i slacking, cut scenes that drone on and on with out much depth and Quest grind that is sometimes not intuitive

The biggest disappointing stuff thus far is the story is not grabbing me into the game, the RPG part of it is really lacking so far. The amount of inventory and collection/gathering and making stuff is driving me nuts too (do people really enjoy grabbing 100s of things a then trying to figure out what to do with all of this? I left an MMO due to crafting time drain.

I hope it gets better but so far its really boring and not very captivating, unfortunately.

actually you dont need to collect most stuff at all. IMO the first game has always been much more compelling.

There really isn't much I can add to this. Obviously some people like something, some people don't, no right or wrong in that... but in the spirit of trying to help you salvage some of your $59.95 plus tax :) , the one thing I'd say, given where you say you are, and when the game was made available, unless you played at least 8-9 hours a day the past 2 days, or you know exactly what to do, you shouldn't be about to finish chapter 1.

The questions I'd ask to better gauge the situation:
How do you know you are about to finish chapter 1?
Have you completed a quest named Melitele's Heart?

The story/plot are hard to get into if you have had no previous contact with The Witcher. Unlike most RPG's, you don't create a character but rather play as one, Geralt of Rivia. CD Projekt released a series of videos about the first witcher, the world of the witcher, and who Geralt is. This should help you feel more comfortable while "in his shoes".

The plot in both witcher games is very political and complex; unlike other fantasy games, it is not as easy to digest and you have to do a decent amount of reading (journal, in-game books, etc) as well as drawing logical conclusions to advance.

In my opinion, the highest points in both games are not things like combat or graphics, but rather the narration and story development, the dialogues, and the choice-and-consequence element. Pay more attention to these elements, they are not just for decoration unlike in most "RPG's" released within the last year :)

You're doing it wrong. This isn't your typical hand holding rpg.

To each their own. Funny, I loved the game the first time I played it, even though I didn't get all of the political dialogue. One thing that using gaming forums has taught me is that most gamers are very....picky, particular, and highly critical. Me, I just appreciate the game for what it is. If I don't like it, I don't spend my time telling others online that I don't like it.

You're doing it wrong. By the end of Act 1, you ought to be immersed in the Witcher's world, savoring every line of dialogue, soaking up every reference and implication, and weighing each choice. The cutscenes are as important as the gameplay, make sure you have subtitles on and read and absorb it all. If you want a dumb game you can ignore the details and just slash through, play Skyrim like a nub.

The highest I've seen The Witcher 2 at since release was 50$. It's been on sale on -50% offers very often at different digital distributors since then. Also "tax" and VAT and whatnot is included in the original game price.

Ok, you are right, I am starting the Chapter 2 Quests now and I am loving this game.

I am glad I got it and am playing with all the free time I can find, its not perfect but what is, I love the fact that its focused on an older audience with the romance stuff and the language it brings more reality to the game and I am now "getting" the story.

Good stuff

PS - Good bye Bioware Hello CD PROJEKT, I hope they make more RPGs :)

Brick&Mortar stores are all selling it at 59.99 + taxes in the US.

Online, Amazon is also charging 59.99 + taxes.

Not sure where you are finding Witcher 2 for less than $50.

Maybe you are talking about PC version only?

Similar thing happened to me. I accidentally skipped the tutorial in the beginning of the game. From then on I was not enjoying the game. I was not getting the game mechanics at all and not having any fun. Then I went online and read people talking about a tutorial. I started the game over and this time I "found" the tutorial I accidentally skipped before. From that point on the Game became more interesting but still not very engaging, I was not "feeling it", no immersion despite the amazing character design, art, dialog, etc.

It was like this until I got out of the dungeons. Once in the first town I played some mini-games in the tavern and then decided to wonder about after the arm wrestling champ. That's when I started to figure out a lot about the game mechanics and begun to enjoy the world and the characters. The beginning of the game is very linear, too much information about the game story politics too fast and as a result very confusing. I'm glad I never gave up and kept pushing ahead. Now I get the importance of the that linear game start (establishing a very important narrative fundamental stone). But still, it was the most unengaging part of the game until the point I am now.

There is a tutorial section in the "back button menu" (xbox player here). Reading these tutorials helped me a lot to wrap my head around the game mechanics, not only the fighting but the actual RPG elements of the game mechanics. There is a lot of information there, very useful for first time players of the series. The Witcher 2 have some game mechanics that escape the WRPG norm and this is a good and bad thing. Good because once you figure out its refreshing and very fun. Bad because its apart from the conventions that we are use and it takes some time to figure it all out on your own.

I'm still trying to figure out how to fight multiple opponents effectively (taking serious beats from some dang elves!). But I already figured out how to use oils, potions, how to level up my character, crafting, etc. Now I'm in deep love with this game. Serious. Deep. Love.
