It doesn't resemble anime in the least. It's a deliberately crude and bold style, to me reminiscent of early European woodcuts.

Hmmm, this puts the flashbacks in a whole other perspective. Makes the choice for this style a lot more logical too.

Actually.. *puts on art students glasses* We have northern Europe to thank for the revolution in the graphic arts. Particularly Germany. Italy had the pope, wealthy banks, and plenty of blank cathedrals to decorate. They also had access to the art of ancient Rome. So they were busy with murals and monuments while northern artist like Altdorfer and Durer were quietly spreading their influence on paper. The Germans arguably reached a wider audience, but it was the Italians who were leading the innovations in art.

$30,000 for art school had to amount to something.

Yes but that flash art style comes mostly from american superheroes comic books, specifically Marvel and DC, with those high color contrast, black shading, mrked black ink and plain colors.
It is pretty unrelated with woodcuts or ancient illustrations, to which TW1 posters are inspired (like Dona said, I agree). I posted the pics becoz I have the sense that many people does not actually know what is the real latest medieval and renaissance art style (supposingly that TW is settled in the 15th cen, more or less). Also, there is is late trend of webcomics, to which W2 flashback movies are inspired as well.

De gustibus, of course. I won't argue about personal taste here (altho I will defend with blood and flesh those flashbacks until death LOL). Just saying that W1 flashback style is certainly not closer to medieval\renaissance art at all, they're mostly photoshop quickpaint concept arts. DeviantArt is full with those paintings more than with W2 webcomic style flashbacks.
I think they've chosen to follow the trend (DA2 also has a similar art style in cutscenes). Webcomics and comics on ebook\ipad etc are the future. Well actually they're already here now...

TW1 had posters?

I'm well aware of the comic book inspiration. Maybe they are just looking at Frank Miller or someone like that. But I'm proposing it is comic art influenced by early renaissance wood cuts. Maybe I'm wrong.

I was referring to TW2 posters, just to be clear. The ones warning about the Kayran and "wanted" headshots.

And yes, TW1 paintings are actually pretty quick digital concepts, more or less polished. Most look pretty rough, though. Funny, I always think digital art mimics acrylics or oil, not aquarel.

BTW is it Trust's art? It kind of looks like his TW1 designs, but not really...

The TW2 flashback art was created by Jakub Rebelka.

Yeah, that's Rebelka's style. If you're ever in the Tricity area (Gdansk/Gdynia/Sopot), you can stay in a room he decorated. Or maybe not, depending on your susceptibility to nightmares. (Lalala Arthotel, Sopot; his work is the leftmost frame)

I cannot read any of the commentary on his work, but it does look to me like primitive woodcuts (the popular stuff like cheap editions of Ars morendi, not the Old Masters) are among his inspirations.

Don't. I also LOVE these little "flashback movies". The art style in it is amazing. it reminds me of Alan Moore's graphic novel V for Vendetta. Same dark, gritty and mature art style.

And do not forget about us Dutchies! The Netherlands was a cultural marvel of high art during that period. Lots of artists traveled to The Netherlands to live and work here.

Well... I guess it doesn't really make sense, but I think I'll like TW2 flashbacks more now that I've heard that they resemble medieval woodcuts. I also thought them kind of comic-like until now, not really fitting and not really my taste, either.

EDIT without editing: I just watched it again and I think it's actually not the art style as much as the animation that I don't like. I would have been fine with still images and camera panning and zooming, I just don't like the comic animations.

@Slimgrin
Thanks! I forgot about Frank Miller yesterday. Sin City ruled the art style and Miller is actually a G.O.D.!

Yes, TW1 had. Remember the Schuttenbach and PFI posters in Temple Quarter?

@Kodaemon

@Dona
I know you meant W2's posters. But W1's posters was different in style and closer to some of the pics I posted above.
And yes, I do consider Trust art :) Indeed I love Truściński's art
