not able to use skill points

I've beaten the game, so I know how to use the talent tree; but I am playing a new game in dark mode and I can't seem to get the be able to select a talent. Is anyone else having this problem?

Did you beat it on normal? Higher difficulties require you to meditate to level (meditate > character) rather than just bringing up the character screen. Not quite sure why to be honest. I suppose it means you can’t spend point in the middle of battle.
