Not enjoying any game at this point

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've posted my own topic on the forums and I've come to you with a rather dire situation, I'm afraid. I've recently finished my semester at University and have been contemplating clearing my backlog of games to play. Now, the problem lies with my lack of enjoyment in playing them. It's been on a steady decline ever since the summer Diablo 3 came out. I had never played Diablo 1 or 2 before the much anticipated third game came out and I had the chance to experience Diablo 2 (I haven't played the first one yet) and for some bizarre reason I felt attached the world of Sanctuary. Diablo 2 didn't have much of a story at all but there was some element of the game that felt right to me, personally. I guess I could point to the music and the atmosphere since I was so impressed how an isometric game could reel me in for that time. It seems like I'm digressing though but there's more to this interjection here. Summer came and went along, and another year of my studies had commenced which left me with absolutely not nearly enough time to enjoy some games. Now that I have the free time to play, I don't have the energy because I'm not being hooked by games that are released today. Most games in the market just feel like reskinned copies of one another with some rather poor attempt at telling a story (this could be through the world or the literal story line that games now show). I forced myself to play through MGS1 since I bought that a while ago and really wanted to experience the magic of playing this game just like I played the demo many years ago.

Since I haven't been able to play something that I feel is unique and interesting to me, I've been on this downward trend looking down on games that came out today with no sense of love or labor involved. I get it, game developers work very diligently on their creations and takes a monumental amount of organization to make stuff happen. The problem lies in this market that seems to target "the enjoy-this-game-for-this-month-until-the-next-one-launches-another-month-later". Maybe I'm not the target audience and I just need to get over myself or there's some place else where I can find something I find unique. Or I could focus on programming something I want to create and work on projects that take up so much of my time that I can just forget about video games.

So, guys and girls, what are your thoughts?

I kind of know the situation. Been so busy with studying that I haven't been able to play games. It was even hard to start anything as I wasn't got used to it anymore.

I would advice you to play "something" - do not get hyped or expect too much. Play for pleasure. The games do not have to be awesome at this point but just "nice way to spend some time". Maybe after sometime your "muscles" remembers what is playing and the familiar good feelings come after that. :)

I enjoyed Tomb Rider that way. And was surprised how I got hooked to it

Hello, I think a lot of people feel you on this one, at least I do. Many people might say that it's your fault that you don't enjoy games anymore but I think they are wrong, if you played Diablo 2 recently and you liked it then it means it's the games you don't like.

Same exact thing happened for me too with diablo, I spent a lot of time on Diablo 2 and was waiting for 3 anxiously only to discover a huge dissapointment, the game didn't last more than a month. Personally I have tried a lot of games, and I pretty much feel the same, after a point I don't even care to try the new 'good ones' because I can already feel how much they will dissapoint me.

Anyway, a good solution is to search for some old games that you might enjoy, for some reason older games have got something in them, that simply based on that you can enjoy it much more than a new decent game. If you are interested I can offer some choices of games I have personally enjoyed very much in the past, and in present too.

You know I was in a similar situation, and just couldn't get myself into any game. Then I got Tomb Raider (2013), and it was surprisingly great, occupied me for quite some times (finished twice). But now I am playing some random crap and waiting for something don't know what. Is it 2013 really lame on good games, or something else?

Believe me... CDPR have perverted our taste for games after their presentation of TW3 in E3. Who would want a sponge cake when you know that there is a chocolate cake to come? At most we content ourselves with a cookie to not disappoint too much with the end result: hungrier for TW3.

Try other classics and Indies. Most modern games demand so little from the player and they are so uninspired that you have little to no reason to play them or even less, replay them.

Play the games that actually have some talent poured in them and that require a mental effort from you. Those are the ones that make you feel accomplished, satisfied and entertained.

For example, some cRPG's like Fallout 1/2, Baldur's Gate 1/2, Planescape Torment, Arcanum, etc. These will require you to learn a satisfyingly elaborate system that lends itself to highly tactical and strategic play. In other words, think before you click.

Your avatar speaks loud and clear. You've already played the greatest game in existence. Now everything is cafeteria food. The world sucks a fat one after journeying through the Sigil and beyond.

EDIT: Listen to Volsung. A body can live forever on a hardy diet of cRPGs and Indies.

P.S. I found Diablo a little dull, but the excitement really kicks up on Hardcore so yu might try that. Duriel is one mean son of a bitch that eats Hardcore characters for lunch. Never journey without leads of Town Portal scrolls ;)

If you fall into boredom for lack of good current games, I highly recommend Limbo, which is very witty, especially Trine 2 co-op, and specifically the end of August the 27th on Steam is coming to the PC port of Castlevania Lord of sadows it's great.
I forgot .... Portal 2
And if you like Tomb Raider, and especially the classics there are plenty of levels that are gems author, and free. />

You sound jaded- stop playing games for awhile, get involved in other hobbies. Why do you think it's important that you have to enjoy playing games 100% of the time?

Of course it's important if you're noticing you're losing interest in one of your hobbies. And no one said 100% of the time.

I agree. I play games regularly but only for short periods of time at night. You really learn to value you game time when it's restricted.

For now, read good books, make music or whatever other thing you can. Instead of simply receiving, sometimes you have to create.

And there's also Wasteland 2 coming out soon! ;)

Yeah, seems like I'm going through the same gaming crisis.

These are the games I have installed right now:

From these the only ones I finished are TW2 and Max Payne 3. The rest...I started them all, fooled around for a few hours(or more in some cases) and stopped. I can't go on.

It started some time ago and I thought it was because I had too many games installed and was distracted, so I uninstalled everything besides TW2 and started playing one game at a time. It helped for some time, I managed to finish a few indie titles this way.

Then XCOM cam and I was super hyped for it...was fun but I got bored. Tried to go through it for a few months, but then decided to install BL2. Played for a while in coop with my brother, but that stopped too. After that I tried all the other games out there, but no luck. Lately I installed L.A. Noire and it just pisses me off with its clunky controls and rather empty world.

So I end up playing BF3 most often, probably because of the randomness factor that every multiplayer match brings, at least there's always something new happening in every game.

Still found no answer to this weird state I'm in

At moments such as this, when discontent worms its way into my soul I turn to the words of Zerthimon.

Balance in all things: Mind, body and soul, all must be nourished if a man is to be whole. For each day of study for the mind, let sweat pour from the body for a day. Likewise develop all that is good for the soul, companionship, selfless good deeds and most important of all laughter, the power that preserves.

Know thyself: Contemplate and accept every part of yourself, glory in every aspect of your being, through knowledge of oneself flows strength. To not know oneself is dangerous, we become lost and susceptible to manipulation.

Endure, in enduring grow strong: Each blow aimed against you is a boon, they serve to do nothing but strengthen you. Know this and smile, for the world cannot hurt you, only make you stronger.

Edit: Or get ratarsed and act silly, good stress relief.

Yea in a somewhat similar situation. I haven't played any game in over half a year.

Not necessarily because there's little that's good in the market. A lot of games I was excited about or seem amazing, now barely get a "meh" from me. Like Rome Total War 2 or Watchdogs.

The only thing I am excited for is TW3 and even then, not as much as one would expect.

When I have empty seasons, still with Flight Simulator X. This never tires me open it occasionally and is very entertaining if you like flight simulation. It's very entertaining learning the use of an aircraft, especially independent payment where you go dozens of hours of entertainment.
If you want and you have time I leave a video.

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely look into playing something for pleasure. I guess there's another problem where visiting sites like reddit and various blogs sour my enjoyment of some games. So much hype and millions of forum posts about disappointed have somehow affected me.

Yeah I was pretty burned out on Diablo 3 because it detracted too much from what Diablo 2's atmosphere great. There was way too much cliche dialogue and too colorful. It tried being so serious but it ended up being something like a childhood saturday morning cartoon.

I'm definitely interested in your recommendations though. Post away friend!

I suppose on the mainstream end of games it does feel lame with some glimpses of something interesting like the Last of Us. I'll try and stay optimistic for the year :)/>/>

That is indeed very very true, Wichat! I have been spoiled by the Witcher games and I'm most definitely looking forward to the Witcher 3.

Is it sacrilege to state that I haven't played Baldur's gate, Fallout 1 or 2, and Arcanum...? I have played Planescape and it was a wonderful experience on my widescreen monitor. Very beautiful experience, though the combat wasn't the best but the literary experience couldn't be rivaled by any other game.

Diablo is indeed quite a dull game if I really think about it but I will admit, hardcore was the best part of Diablo for me. You're right about the analogy of playing cRPGs and modern ones (except the Witcher, which I still think is miles better than any other modern rpg today). Modern ones just aren't good enough...

Blunt and to the point, I do appreciate your response. I guess I shouldn't be playing games 100% of the time and I'm certainly getting burned out trying to play as many games in one day.
