[NSFW maybe] Sex scenes: Why can't they be more realistic / raw?

I think the sex scenes in The Witcher were pretty out there. I don't think we have anything to worry about lol. Of course there won't be full on footage of penetration, it'll be tasteful lol.
Probably the most meaningful and sexy looking sex scenes in all the games that have such involved. Dragon Age Origins was before that which I found did relationships pretty well with some interesting story implications and outcomes.

Agreed though DAO did have clothed dry humping. Not that it mattered but should be mentioned considering the threads subject matter.

At the end of the day the sex scenes aren't to provide hardcore pron. Even in TW3 the sex scenes were cute, funny and showed your favourite characters (I imagine people are gunna try to romance characters they find the most interesting) in a different/unique light that most people don't get to see in video games. That's where the fanfics usually come in

Your lover: You didn't cheat, huh?
V: Nah
Your lover: Really...
V: ...
Your lover: Explain this braindance!
Yass I live for trashy video game drama. I hope my V can cheat and cause that drama lol
Edit: but if my V can romance Jackie... Oh wait nevermind he would still have to deal with Misty :ROFLMAO:

Games were still exploring sex scenes back then. But I do think in terms of story telling it was awesome and those were golden days of EA and Bioware

For sure, what divides story sex scenes and porn is the former is a exploration of the type of relationship two characters which in turns speaks to the characteristics of the characters or, in some cases, the culture the characters exist in ( e.g Demolition Man movie, due to the hyper nanny state type culture sex is done virtually with not physical connection whatsoever) . Porn is of course about the sex. The former is of course what is ideal though would seetle for sex scenes that are nor just there to add some steaminess.

I will rephrase that: It should not be a half hearted thing just tacked on as a requirement. Whether it is full on smut or light vanilla both are good, it must serve a purpose for the story.

Origins had clothed dry humping because Fox News freaked out about the sex scenes in Mass Effect 1 without actually seeing the scenes in question (characters were naked but you saw butt and side boob) and claimed there was full digital nudity.

As a result in Dragon Age Origins and DA2 and Mass Effect 2 and 3 characters had sex in their underwear (apart from Hack Walter's favourite pet assari who was naked in her ME3 sex scene) until Dragon Age Inquisition and Mass Effect Andromeda where you could see naked butt and boobs (the sex scene with Cora in Andromeda was basically soft core porn)

DA:O's romance scenes had bigger problems than just characters rolling around in their medieval underoos. All of them were set in the middle of the camp, not even bothering to use the inside of a tent and Morrigan humorously enough is more clothed in her underwear than she is in her default outfit. The animation work was also a bit cringey as well. Honestly DA:O would have been better off with fades to black.

As for Cyberpunk 2077, besides concerns over getting slapped with an Adults Only rating and sales numbers being hit with a sledgehammer...there's really no reason to have explicit sex scenes. What would they add to the story?

Games should emulate Hollywood films or TV series with their romance scenes, not pornography. Anything from fades-to-black, to non-nude sex scenes, to sex scenes with light nudity conveys the point well enough. We really don't need to see penetration or spend anything more than a few moments with the characters getting busy to get the point.

FWIW I feel that same way about graphic violence as well. We really don't need to spend a prolonged period of time with a character being tortured for example to get the point about what's going on. Establish that some bad stuff went down and move on.

Emulating films and tv series sounds great and I'm pretty sure the devs already refer to these things during development (along with porn). However, for the sake of discussion, which movies/tv series do you think would be good to emulate? I agree with you about dragon age origins by the way, the bizarrely animated underwear sex scenes were truly ridiculous and made me cringe, I love that game but always skip those scenes!

I'm struggling to think of an example. It would be fairly easy if the scenes where from a third person perspective but I don't know that I've ever seen a film or TV show where the romance scenes where from the perspective of one of the participants. Unless I'm mistaken, I believe the devs confirmed the romance scenes in Cyberpunk 2077 will also all be FPP.

I thought the the scenes from TW2 and TW3 were fairly cinematic however and don't think Cyberpunk 2077 necessarily needs to be any more explicit than those.

Actually, it goes with the story. This world where there is no taboo, where violence appears everywhere from language to street fights and assassination, why would sex be taboo? As for the first person view, when you do a cinematic scene you can switch view, it's more an artistic / development cost choice than a mandatory thing. I believe we are used to dissociate cinema and pornography because of the taboos in our societies, but you can show genital interaction aesthetically. It is done in a lot of independent films. And I believe these kind of scene would be rightful given the context of the game. Of course there is the rating issue, but honestly why is there a distinction between mature and adult only? It makes no sense. A feature that would be useful is a violence / nudity toggle though, to hide what you don't want to see, or what you don't want to show on your TV or your stream.
