NVidia GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti

NVidia's Maxwell based 700-series cards: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-750-ti

Looks quite tempting to me. According to many sites the cards has excellent performance-per-watt rate.
I'm quite sure I will upgrade my SteamOS AMD HD5000 series card with GTX 750 Ti.

It's a mid range Nvidia, right?

Yes, it's not those upcoming high end Maxwell cards that has ARM integrated into them. 2nd generation Maxwell cards will be 20nm cards. I didn't find any good sources when they are supposed to be released but at least rumors says this year.

GTX 750 Ti costs 150€ and OC version 170€.

This would be my first NVidia card. I like AMD open source drivers but the proprietary drivers has been very bad. NVidia in the other hand should have very good proprietary drivers but open source drivers has been lagging behind although nouveau seem to have made great progress recently.

nouveau's main problem is lack of scaling, i.e. it uses minimal clocking all the time. So it's basically useless for gaming as is. On the AMD side things are improving, but there is still no support for OpenGL 4 in the open drivers. And closed AMD drivers are way worse than what Nvidia releases.

Just barely mid-range, performance well below the 760, comparable to the 650 and 650Ti. Very interesting for those who must have a small low-power nVidia GPU or need an early look at Maxwell technology. Not so much so if you were expecting Maxwell to make a splash in the high-performance GPU market.

These are cut-down GPUs (512:32:16 for the 750, 640:40:16 for the 750Ti, 128-bit VRAM path).
US street price for the 2GB 750Ti: $150 to $170 (Newegg); when compared to a 1GB 650Ti at $130 to $170, it's not a bad deal.

I wonder how noisy it is. One of the things I really like about GTX 680 is its big fan - it's really silent under low load, and even under high one it's surprisingly not noisy. Some lower end Nvidias were way more noisy in my experience.

I hope that's going to be the 800 series...but we'll see.

guru3d had reference cards and said they were extremely quiet, 39dBA at full load.

The models I've seen in advertising so far have the card makers' usual third-party cooler designs. Since this is a very low power GPU, I would guess that the fan profiles on the third-party coolers could be dialed way back for quiet operation.

I ordered MSI GTX 750 Ti (150€) today and I will going to get it in Friday. This is going to be my first NVidia card ever so I'm look forward to be able to try it. I have already silent Nexus 400W PSU ready for it. Currently my SteamOS is running 850W PSU + Radeon HD5850 - loud and slow :). Unfortunately 400W PSU is lacking 6-pin plug so I'm not able to use with HD5850 that without adapter.

Anyway. It's not going to be a very fast but I really hope it's going to be silent and run cool. Crusader Kings 2, Europa Universalis 4 and Football Manager 2014 are waiting. Only thing I'm still lacking are Witcher games of course, but maybe there's still some hope.

Marcin Iwiński, CD Projekt RED (Source from 1:29:16):
"First of all, we have a lot of respect for Steam and we think they are very, very good business guys and good gamer friendly guys and that's really, really important. We like what they are doing and with the Steam Box, if they will be able to deliver a cool console, definitely, we are interested in having a game there.

You know, one of the reasons we have not released The Witcher on Linux is that we most probably have to address five different versions of Linux and this is always terrible to support the quality of the games afterwards. The patches, the updates, and everything. If Steam will deliver a constant Linux environment, call it SteamOS or anything like that, we would love to have our games there because, you know, the more people play our games, the better for us.
