• The difficulty in killing a single Ghoul

i just started the witcher. I am a novice witcher 5 stars.
It takes me all my power/skill to kill the ist ghoul in the crypt.
Then to take on two more i get killed every time and only see a small segment of the red circle around the feet of the ghoul erased.
In the fight i see blue flashes from the sword and get messages of "to fast" most of the time.
Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to go back and repeat training or is the game beyond my capabilities. Any help or advise please

Moving to the correct forum .

Ghouls can be tough at the early stages of the game . Drink Swallow and Tawny Owl potions . Read books that you can get from the antiquarian that tells you of the ghouls weaknesses and how to combat them and be sure to visit the place of power just outside the cave for that little extra oomph to your sign . Also be sure you`re using the strong style for your sword .

"Too fast" means you're clicking too soon. Button mashing doesn't work with this game; you need to time your attacks.

There's a definite rhythm of "attack, wait for Geralt to follow through, repeat attack". Once you get the feel of it, combat becomes easy. You also get big damage bonuses on successful repeat attacks, and these increase as you level up your sword skills.

Listen and watch Geralt as he finishes an attack. You'll see him finish with a little flourish as he brings his sword back to guard position, and you'll hear a swish-swish sound at the same time. The time to repeat the attack is just after that finish animation. As you practice, you'll be able to time when you can start your next attack successfully.

If you're having trouble with ghouls, barghests, or other monsters in Act I, try using your Aard sign. They are easily stunned for one-hit kills.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Ghouls are not easy to kill at this stage.
TW1 combat is all about preparing right.
You should apply necrophage oil on your silver sword and use the strong style. You should also drink potions. For example swallow (regeneration), thunderbolt (damage) and blizzard (evasion). It may be a good idea to bring along a great axe and make the ghouls bleed first and slice them up afterwards.
Besides that you need to time your clicks right. Just click whenever the sword leaves a yellow trail in the air and the attack combo will continue.

EDIT: looks like everyone were faster than me :D :D

In Act II and later, the silver sword and necrophage oil are excellent weapons against ghouls and their stronger kin.

In Act I, though, you have neither.

Yes, you are right about the silver sword. The oil should be available though.

It's been a while since I last installed TW1. I should have checked, sorry.

You're right about necrophage oil being available; the recipe is in Book of the Swallow, and the skill is at the second level of Intelligence. A character development sequence that is strong in alchemy, since it will want an early investment of 4 points in Intelligence, is needed.

True. A stunning Aard costs less and it is overall useful in the chapter.

There's something else.

I found out about this on my 8th or 9th playthroug:
They cannot attack you unless they get close. If you fight two monsters and you jump one over the head, the other needs to walk over before it can attack again. Till then it is a 1-on-1 fight instead of 2-on-1. Jumping in the right moments you can keep a favourable ratio. It takes a while, but you will have a better survival chance. I wiped out a cellar with 4 graviers in it this way. Against those head on my poor Geralt lasted only seconds.
