Obsidian Joining Wasteland 2 if funding reaches $2.1 million

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/30/open-world-whirl-a-planetside-2-trailer/

Here’s a big, bouncy ball of unexpected good news for you. Brian Fargo and his studio inXile Entertainment are, as you well know, working on a sequel to the seminal RPG Wasteland, and have successfully Kickstarted it to the tune of $1.6 million. Since exceeding their initial target of $900,000, they’ve been able to add Mac and Linux versions to their masterplan for the post-nuclear roleplaying game. But that’s not all. They’ve just been in touch to say that, if they can reach $2.1 million during the 17 days remaining on the funding schedule, they’ll be bringing in Obisidian Entertainment, including Planescape: Torment mastermind Chris Avellone, to help them make the game.

Oh my, this needs to happen as it is pretty much a Black Isle reunion.

Here's the link for those interested in pledging.

They're already at 1.72 million dollars, 1.7 million through kickstarter + 20k from Paypal donations.

Pretty good news. I've already pledged 60 bucks for the cause. With Chris Avellone on board I am considering to double the amount.

I almost wish CDP Red had a hand in that effort too... like you know, provide 1-2 "interns" as coders or designers to work for half a year there.

This is awesome. I upped my donation to $300 most I can spare. I really hope they reach the goal it would be almost like Black Isle 2.0. Oh man if only that would happen. When the game comes out it will be so far ahead of anything Bethesda or Bioware and sorry CDPR but ahead of you guys too. It's the only open world, non-linear RPG that can get story and exploration. Here's to Brian Fargo and his team to get achieving $2.1 million.

This is every publisher who didn't want to back Wasteland 2. Fargo doesn't need you!
Btw here is a great interview of Brian trying to get the game developed and some real insider info on how the gaming industry has become more devs vs. publishers. The good thing about not needing a publisher is how real the interviews are.

Well, personally I am a little bit worried about the whole craze - how easily people jump on the bandwagon and offer money with nothing but a handful of promises. I am one of them, but I think this is getting out of hand.

Still, I agree that Brian and Co. in conjunction with Avellone can deliver something that can beat the crap out of the Witcher. Sorry TW, but the lack of whollistic character progression, where my skills can be used outside combat is seriously getting on my nerves.

Chromie, that is ludicrous for you to donate your money and for these people to even ask for it. It's a bloody scam. These lazy douche bags should be ashamed begging for money from dedicated fans so they can deliver later. Bullshit.

Who else does this?

Well I'll be doubling my donation from $50 to $100 thanks to this. Also Obsidian will possibly be doing their own in the future anyway so that will be 2 kickstarters I will be donating to for sure.

And your return is what? What if the game sucks?

Wish I'd tried this scam when I was fresh out of college.

My return is watching them get to make the game they want to make, having a say in that game and playing it when it comes out. Also considering Kickstarter has been around for 4 years and I haven't heard any claims of mass scams I feel pretty safe. Especially with knowing the companies themselves they aren't here to scam people they want to make games. I like Obsidian a lot and trust them so I will donate to them and this one because I like them.
EDIT: Also getting a hard copy collector's edition since that's the $100 reward.

Sorry if I'm bitter, but I've never got a free ride with my work. Must be nice. Hope the game pans out and all.

Your lack of faith is disturbing, slimgrin. These are people who have been around in game development since way back when, and have proven many times that they are in it for creating games, not making money. Now, the kind of games they want to make, and the same kind of games a lot of fans still want to play, are unfortunately the kind of games no publishers of today want to invest in - not enough profit, they say. Now, with Kickstarter, these game developers can completely circumvent these soulless publishers, and ask their fans directly to help fund their projects; the developers are finally allowed to make a game they want to make and the fans will be able to play a game they want to play.

And trust me, no-one would give money to some unknown person such as yourself (no offence) who promised to create a game if people gave you one million dollars. The situation when people like Tim Schafer and Brian Fargo ask the same - complete with a vision statement and philosophy to back it up - is completely different. This sort of funding is not that different from how it looks when game developers are pitching a project to a publisher, in hopes they'll get the necessary funding to make the project reality. The only difference is that the fans become the "publisher" in a way, allowing the developer to get the money needed from the target audience directly, rather than trying to appeal to some corporate machine that wants to put "FPS" into every title, and which has nothing else on its mind than to maximize monetary profit.

It's not a "free ride," you plonker! They are selling their talent and passion to thousands of fans who are obviously willing to help fund their pet project(s), simply because they feel these people are trustworthy and won't just "throw something together" and then live large off the unspent budget (as mentioned by 80Maxwell08, there's been no past scandals revealing any sort of scam, in the four years Kickstarter has been around). The kind of respect and trust these people have earned over the years - solely based on the products they have delivered and the philosophies they convey - is nothing I would sneeze at.

Well it isn't about giving them a free ride Obsidian has had tons of problems with publishers in the past that result in their games being far worse. KOTOR 2 being rushed and Lucas Arts refusing to give them the right to patch it after release and Fallout New Vegas had it's QA done by Bethesda which doesn't need to be elaborated on. Even back as Black Isle with Planescape Torment they had to cancel development and ship since they ran out of money and couldn't support it after the first patch. Fallout might have been the only game they managed to ship without being rushed or forced to cancel all development. I just want to see what Obsidian can make without the restraints of a publisher.

Chromie has dropped $300 of her hard earned money on the project..

What if it doesn't deliver?

"Sorry ya'll, we like totally wanted to make a great game, we had this insane artistic vision, but THE MAN wanted us to be on schedule. So yeah, if you could just send a few more dollars, that'd be GREAAAT. Thanks."

You must think of it as an investment on the backer's part; exactly as how publishers invest in a project to allow a developer to start making a game. Obviously, Chromie is convinced that Brian Fargo and his company will deliver, and is therefore ready to invest $300 into the project. Now, it's probably not only the pitch in itself that made the sale to Chromie, but a long-standing reputation and trustworthiness, allowing Chromie to feel entirely secure in making this decision. If a person or a company has managed to build this kind of trust, then all respect to them.

I am normally really skeptical of such things, but the project seems solid enough that I was willing to pony up $75 for it. That's almost as much as I paid for DA2 since I bought the stupid DLC. I look at this as penance for what I did to gaming by supporting that piece of crap.
