Obsidian to develop South Park RPG

Obsidian, the authors of critically acclaimed RPGs: Kotor2, Neverwinter Nights 2 Mask of the Betrayer, and Storm of Zehir, Fallout 3 New Vegas, as well as some less successful titles like Dungeon Siege 3 and Alpha Protocol were announced to work on South Park RPG.

They are in close collaboration with the creators of the TV series - Trey Parker and Matt Stone - and another renowned team of game developers - THQ.

I wonder what will come out of it.

I read about this yesterday, and while I'm more or less neutral towards South Park (never really managed to see the brilliance of the show, even though it brings out a few laughs), I adore Obsidian. I wish they would get the chance to develop their own IP again, soon; it's been almost entirely ordered work from other studios. Except for Alpha Protocol of course, which - despite it not doing very well sales-wise, and suffering from technical shortcomings - was an absolutely amazing RPG. I did not think it would be possible to get me interested in a "secret agent" type game like that, but Obsidian pulled it off.

A ludicrous idea. And I don't often use the word ludicrous.

I don't know about adoration, but I like those guys too. They are pretty much the only AAA developer (apart from CDP Red) that makes actual RPGs - and they are quite good at it.

While original NWN2 left me cold, the briliance they showed in MotB and SoZ made up for initial failure. Fallout New Vegas is another really good game from that studio - to me it was on par with Fallout 1-2 and miles better than Fallout 3.

On the other hand the last flop with Dungeon Siege was really something I didn't expect. Why they took this IP in the first place is beyond me.

I agree that AP is quite good RPG, but at least to me it fell short of expectations. You see, to my mind when you do a spy game the first thing you'd like to do is add to it some substantial credibility to the gameplay. For instance if I trigger an alarm in a section of the building it should alert all the guards in the damned building, not only 4-5 dudes from the adjacent rooms! Similarly, when I fire a gun it should cause commotion everywhere! I guess that expecting more of Thief meets Deus Ex gameplay was too much in this day and age.

Also, the game suffered because of consolitis... a lot. If people say TW2 interface were bad, look at AP!

Lastly, (and this is problem with all Obidian games) the trash mobs. Damn, must they fill every square inch with enemies that pose no challenge to you, apparently just to prolong the game?

However, it delivered quite decent story, quite fun C&C. It saddened me whan I heard AP won't have part 2. :(

Pray you, tell us why? Depending on the angle they take that could be quite original and enjoyable. It depends how satiric they will get, and what kind of gameplay they can offer. Other then that, given Obsidian's track record they stand a good chance of realising solid product, albeit unconventional. And frankly, I miss the era when games weren't copy/paste of each other, but strived to be original.

^^^I'll tell you why. As an American I get more retarded brand name bullshit stuffed down my throat than the rest of the planet combined. I don't need a South Park RPG anymore than I need a Family Guy RPG, or a Simpsons RPG, or a GI JOE RPG. If Obsidian has half the talent in writing than they do in creating bugs they'd come up with their own IP.

I see watch you mean... But then again I see some potential in South Park RPG - especially after TV seeing episodes like:

South Park: The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers
or
Good Times With Weapons

Maybe it's my habit of buying games half a year after release, but I didn't notice any gamebreaking bugs with any of them. Frankly, TW2 caused me more issues this year than any of the Obsidian games - problems with DLC, a few random crashes, a gamebreaking bug in Roshe's path act2, when after a fight with Dethmold in the mines I got locked in the magic sphere (replayed the battle 17 times before managed to avert the bug), two side quests not triggering when they should etc. The charm of un-patched games, I guess :)

... they'd come up with their own IP.

Like CDP Red did... Oh, wait :D
