one thing i disliked about witcher 2

is that if you never played first, which as console gamer i couldn't, the story made little sense. it assumed a huge amount of knowledge of the world and story already and made me as a newcomer feel disconnected from it, even though i had a decent experience with the game. i really hope 3 is not the same and will stand on its own merit as a single story

You do know that the game continues a story of Geralt, and that there is a whole 7 novel cycle about him (now 8 novels)? You are obviously literate because you posted here. So how about just reading the damn books while there is enough time till TW3 release?

You can buy the books on amazon, for example. Also there are fan translations:

http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/20967-our-community-fan-translations/

If you want to know about the world, just go and read them! It is that simple. And why a hell people demand a story in TW2 to be crystal-clear to the new-comers? Nobody in a sane mind demanded that the last season of Lost, for example, would be crystal-clear for people who did not watch previous seasons. For fuck's sake, just stop bringing it up as some design mistake, and go read the books!

Have no interest in the books.

if you need to read books to understand a games story, the developer has failed.

And Lost was a TERRIBLE series.

The appeal is a game about a Monster Hunter who goes and , you know, hunts monsters.

I could care less about the politics. The books aren't exactly Game of Thrones level.

Which is why I was greatly disappointed in the sequel though got some enjoyment of.

That's where you're wrong. The witcher series is not as much about "monster hunting" as it is about discussing decisions and fate, humanity, perversion, scheming, and so on. If you want to go around "monster hunting" and not building an intricate story, then the Witcher is not for you. Do not even try getting anywhere near the full fledged computer RPG's.

And about the books... you might be surprised. The English translations are terrible so don't let that ruin your impression of the saga, which was originally written in Polish.

U must be hired by bethesda or EA.

Anyway, if u read the books, u can understand more stuff. I didnt read any books and i still understand everything the witcher 2 has.

THe key is, to replay several times on different pathways.

I guess the witcher series isnt for u then. U are welcome to take my position as Windhelm Guard after i quit when tw3 is out.

And how would you know if you did not read them?

This game series is based on books. If you are not interested in reading, it is your problem, and not the problem of TW games. It is not like these are the only RPGs on the market. Can't comprehend the plot - move on to something else. Problem solved.

My opinion about TW3 development: CDPR should cater to their fans who read and know the lore, and not cater to people with reading disabilities who want a 7-novels-2-games plot presented in Cliff notes fashion.

Sorry, but the story in TW2 is not hard to comprehend without reading the books, though the full picture is revealed only if you have played both Roche's and Iorveth's sides. Devs are not responsible for your lazy attitude. So look for the problem in yourself first.

I had not read the novels when TW2 came out and it made perfect sense to me. You have to play both paths. But yes, it does tend to just throw you in the world and it can be messy... but I like the challenge. I'd rather just be thrown in the world and find out for myself than be delivered everything on a plate. They even implemented a tutorial later on, no idea why, do people find it that hard?

On the contrary, if the devs create a game that alienates their fanbase that know the lore and events and it feels like a new game with no relation to the previous material THEN the devs have failed.

I agree. The exposition and story was too obscure and hard to follow.

That made it very rewarding after 4 playthroughs ,but the truth had to be told. That's a flaw in TW2 not found in TW1.

Jeez guys lighten up . Reading 8 books should not be required to play and enjoy a game . Besides the books would only introduce a person to the background behind the story . While I agree that learning the lore is better it shouldn`t be required . Besides which the games happen 5 years after the books end . When Witcher 2 was released there was a lot of criticism about information overload for new players .

As for newcomers to the series well we all were at one time or another so give the newcomers some leeway and offer some friendly advice instead of turning them away .

What I would suggest is reading the journal to learn about the characters , locations , and bestiary .

How friendlier can we get when we offer fan translations here? Just download and read them.

Suggestion to read a journal that is already in the game, sounds a bit paternalistic. The games are M-rated after all, and adults should have enough intelligence to find them and read on their own. I would prefer to give them at least that much credit - to be perfectly capable to find and read in-game journal, especially given that we constantly get prompts on a screen about new entries.

But, all right, if some people were unable to do it, here it is: there is an in-game journal that tells about characters and some events in the past. It is a good idea to open it and read when a new entry appears. For example, in the prologue you can read about Geralt, Triss, Foltest, La Valette castle and the dungeon, and so on.

Also there are in-game books you can find or buy, where you can learn about history, geography, politics, and monsters. After you read the book, you can safely sell it, the info is stored in the journal.

But to do any of it, people, you must fucking actually make an effort to READ all of this. If you are not into any kind of reading at all, then just move onto some other game.

LOL I see a lot of butthurt nerds

Skyrim is the best fantasy RPG out there, and thats what Witcher 3 has to beat. Appealing to only nerds like some of you here wont help it sell.

This. The 'RPG elements' in Skyrim are so bleak it's pretty much an "action adventure" game.

Not that it doesn't look amazing- it does- but insisting you read poorly translated novels to give a crap about the story is incredibly silly and shows some of you have no concept of decent story telling.

wrong. Baldurs gate 2 is the all time best RPG.
Followed by Baldurs gate, planescape torment(this is the true rpg), icewind dale etc

Then we have bethesda's golden age game, Morrowind.

Skyrim is not even considered an RPG. It is basically hack and slash boredom.

I suggest u troll other forums like Bioware.

And btw, dragon origins also beats skyrim in terms of 'RPG'

If u dont like this game, dont play it then, get out. U wont know what u will be missing.
