Pagefile and Virtual memory questions

I have the game installed on a separate partition (non-OS), I only have one HDD. Do I need to set pagefiles for the partition where the game is installed as well as the partition that my OS is running from? The BCDEDIT/ IncreaseVa command has helped to solve my crashing issues, however is it safe to leave the setting on 2800 when not playing the Witcher? The system I'm on has 4GB of RAM on 32-bit Vista.

Im not sure how Vista is handling these things but i have just one page file on C partition - increased to 3.5 gb and it runs alright on my XP.With patch 1.2 i dont think there is a big need to alter page file anymore.Still you can always set it to 3.5gb or something like it and see for yourself.I usualy turn off paging at other partitions to save space.maybe some Vista users know more...

Even with the new patch the increase pagefile size is still necessary. Just not sure whether I need one for each partition. I've set mine to 4GB-5GB+ according to the advice here with the maximum recommended by Vista.

No. You only need one page file for your whole computer - you can put this anywhere, and even split it across several partitions, however windows sees it as one virtual memory space. One single page file of fixed size as near to the edge of your hard disk is the best option for performance. Near to the edge just translates to as near to the start as possible, so ideally put it on your first partition and when you don't have much data getting in the way already. But it's not critical. How exactly are you using the BCDedit command?

I'm using the command as recommended by another thread: namely BCDEDIT /set IncreaseUserVa 2800. I've set it back to 2048 but will have to wait for a restart for it to take effect. Just wondering if it's safe to leave it on that setting since lately I've been surfing the net and playing the Witcher only on this system.

With Vista I think it is indeed safe to leave it on for other programs. The only time it wouldn't be safe would be if vista suddenly needed a huge amount of extra address space for it's kernel - and that's very unlikely unless they very badly bloat it during a service pack or something (SP1 doesn't).
