PC Shutting Down... Again

Hey, so I had a similar issue I posted about previously, where my PC shut down when my adrenaline bar was full because of a texture that screwed with my GPU. I have FCR2 installed, and someone said this texture was added in with that. However, now when I'm exploring the dark ruins in Vergen, and the wraiths appear, my PC shuts down as they appear. It doesn't seem to like the effect shown when they appear. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7970 Vapor-X GPU, and I can run the game on max settings very easily. Is there any fix for these shut downs? Are they related? And is it a result of FCR2 again?

whats your motherboard? and whats your psu? you may not have enough powerful psu to support your entire system. need more detail about your spec.

Do you have Vsync enabled in the graphics options? Some textures and/or menus can cause a GPU to overload rendering them. It is really rare for a card to do that but these new 7900 series cards are pretty powerful. Try enabling Vsync and see what happens. One example of this was when StarCraft II was first released, the main menu didn't have any type of FPS limit built into the engine and people literally fried their GPU's just sitting on the main menu.

If it doesn't help, please post the clock speeds you have that 7970 cranked to and if possible, use a program (such as HWmonitor) while playing in these areas and post the temperatures your system gets to while trying to deal with these textures if you can before a shut down.

Alienware Aurora R3 power supplies usually have a Dell proprietary label anyway. It won't tell you anything useful.

The Aurora R3 gets a 525W or 875W power supply. Dell buys these power supplies from whoever meets their specs. Flextronics, HIPRO, and Delta are known suppliers.

If you have the 525W power supply, I would suspect that the GPU and the game are overloading it. The GPU wants 250W or more TDP, and the game will drive it at full power for extended periods. FCR 2 tortures it even harder, especially in particle effects.

Some of the Vapor-X models (Sapphire uses the Vapor-X trade name, so it's a Sapphire card) are factory overclocked. This game does not play nice with some factory overclocked cards. They're stable enough to clear the manufacturer's test, but not stable enough for this game. If you have a factory overclock, the first thing to try is to undo it. Using RadeonPro or some other suitable tool, set the clock down to stock (925 MHz) and see if that improves its behavior.

Keep us posted! I hope you don't have the lower end PSU. If you open your case, inspect the PSU unit. A lot of them will have the wattage written on a sticker/label somewhere on the PSU itself, maybe yours does...

I would recommend unplugging your computer if you need to move/touch anything to see the label on the PSU if it has one.

With any Dell, you can also get the original inventory from the tech support site; just input your service tag number (it's on a sticker). That should tell you which power supply it came with.

Getting a different power supply to fit the Aurora 3 case may be a little challenging. It's very tight in there. Not just every ATX12V model will fit.

So definitely see what you can do with Vsync and the GPU clock first.
