PCGames Germany = stupid GameOfTheYear voters

First of all, I'm German too and I'm still a reader of PCGames myself.

Today I saw the results of their votings and I even cannot say how much I'm ashamed of my landsmen. Not only that most of the voters are stupid Battlefield-kiddies that would have voted for everything with BF3 in title, even if it would have been "worst game, worst graphics etc..", no the biggest problem I have is their vote for the really bad Skyrim for RPG-GotY. Even in "best graphics"-category the vote turned out better for Skyrim than for Witcher 2, that unbelieveable. My guess is, the voters are just stup!d fanboys that cannot understand and enjoy an interesting, adult and complex story like Witcher 2 gives us.

I'm really ashamed of my country. Please, CDP forgive us, there are a lot of intelligent people and players in Germany, it just seems no one votes in meaningless PCGames polls.

Merry Christmas to all and happy Witcher playing.

I have a feeling that the Skyrim players are much younger and more numerous. One day they will grow up and become Witcher 3 players, or Witcher 4....

I don't get the Skyrim hate. I love it, and I love TW2. They set out to do some very different things (wide open sandbox of Skyrim vs. carefully constructed narrative of TW2), and both suceed at them. Both also have their flaws.

Skyrim's great, but TW2 definitely has better graphics. Actually, I don't get the BF3 hate. It's a great game and the only game this year with graphics on par with TW2.

skyrim is awful. it looks like a cartoon game appealing to children. horned helmets like imaginary vikings headdress...terrible.

It would make me feel a lot better if people had a different word for open-world games like Skyrim versus story-based games like TW1/2 or Dragon Age Origins (which I really liked). It annoys me that people refer to Skyrim with such superlatives and call it a great RPG because it's missing what I consider crucial in an RPG and instead it has a lot more of what I consider less important. I think this is where the temptation to hate comes from. I feel midunderstood.

This reminds me of the "Baldurs Gate 2" vs. "Diablo 2" conversations years, "epic story" vs. "hack&slay". Its like "Witcher 2" vs. "Skyrim", although this are really different types of RPGs. I'm not sure if this phrase could be to offensive but in my opinion "Witcher 2" vs. "Skyrim" is equal to "use your brain; play game; enjoy an epic story; enjoy great visual presentation" vs. "don't use your brain; play game; what is a story, let's hack and slay like a zombie; graphics, what are they for?".

What annoys me most is the fact that Skyrim-fanboys don't care about how horrible Skyrims graphics are, they just voted for it, because they like the game. The results for best graphics (PCG): Battlefield 3>Skyrim>Crysis 2>Witcher 2>Batman Arkham City... How stupid is that? http://www.pcgames.de/PC-Games-Brands-19921/News/PC-Games-Spiel-des-Jahres-2011-So-habt-ihr-abgestimmt-Genre-Koenige-bestes-Studio-Enttaeuschungen-Ueberraschungen-und-mehr-860215/galerie/1605897/

The readers' votings at PC Games are quite strange. Battlefield 3 won in many categories whereas TW2 is far behind in eligible categories.

PC Games Hardware has a voting too Most beautiful PC game ever. It's a user's poll and still open. Some days ago TW2 was leading. Now it's runner up, it's an head-to-head competition between TW2 and Skyrim.
I'm amazed about the great difference of results between the PC Games and PC Games Hardware readers.

Skyrim is nowhere near TW2 in the visuals dept. The engine is outdated in a number of ways. I can't believe it's even close in such a poll.

Welcome to democracy, where the majority wins. You can't really argue against more people buying Skyrim, and being happy enough to vote for it. If there are more people voting for Skyrim than for Witcher 2, then rightfully Skyrim should win.

Witcher should take baby steps, and first aim for a Game of the Year award from a magazine, because that award is given by the magazine editors and not by the majority vote.

Having said that, PCGamer gave Witcher 2 a good score, but were really underwhelmed by the game's ending. I'm pretty sure this is echoed by many gamers. The journey was great, but the ending was really underwhelming and flat. If they can fix this part of their story-telling, they will go further in becoming game of the year.

Otherwise, the game is great. Great graphics, great story, nice fast-paced combat.

Witcher's main competitor would be Mass Effect, because both are not open world RPG games, both have incredible graphics, voiced conversations, story, multiple choices, etc.

Mass Effect 2 actually wowed me more than Witcher 2. But Witcher 2 does have the potential to be a great series.

I was talking about visuals. Red engine produces higher quality graphics than the Creation engine. And TW2 doesn't have to take baby steps, it's won numerous awards and received accolades from major mags and websites.

Be glad it's Skyrim and not another game that I will not name. I would have loled hard as to break my jaw.

Skyrim is superb, no doubt about it. I almost feel as Dues Ex is being neglected in awards given the early release it had.

I think I might lol that hard just thinking about it. :)
And actually, one of The Escapist's editors put it in his personal top five.

Personally, I like Skyrim and have no interest in and thus no particular criticism of BF3, but TW2's graphics are still superior to Skyrim's. Oh well. My country has also had its share of silly award choices, so the OP doesn't have to feel lonely.
