Performance Help

Hi Everyone,

Need some verification on the performance I should expect with the below specs:

Asus G75vw-Ds72
3rd Gen Core i7Intel i7-3610QM / 2.3 GHz ( Quad-Core )
Memory: 16 GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M (3 GB GDDR5 SDRAM)

Pretty choppy at high settings, and when I do auto-detect it selects the low profile. I uninstalled the 3d graphics driver, but is there something I am missing for such poor performance?

Thank You

The most likely problem is that the computer gets confused and tries to run the game on the weak GPU that's built in to the Core i7. This is caused by built-in software called Optimus that tries to guess which GPU to use. You will usually do well to force Optimus's hand, by going into the nVidia Control Panel, and in the "3D Settings", set witcher2.exe to run on the "high performance nVidia GPU".

The auto-detect will probably also be fooled by Optimus. Don't believe it in your case. Try High or Ultra settings, but disable Ubersampling, Cinematic DOF, and Motion Blur.

Another possibility, unfortunately all too likely with laptops, is the game exceeds the thermal capacity of the laptop. This game runs the GPU at full performance continuously, and not all laptop designs provide enough cooling to do so.

Are the "M" chips up to snuff with their desktop counterparts? I know that mobile chips used to have limited functionality compared to big brother.

May be just the 600 series in general, they don't have everything fully fleshed out from what I'm seeing. Have you tried the latest beta driver, and set the GPU performance mode to "max performance"? I've noticed that the default "adaptive" can be troublesome for some games.

Thank you both for the quick response(s).

Just to make sure I am doing this correctly:

I added the witcher 2 under the "program settings" tab in the "manage 3D settings" link in the nvidia control panel (located in the steam folder). I then selected power management mode to prefer "maximum performance" for the witcher 2.

The only reason I ask is because there is no "high performance Nvidia GPU" to be found, and the only adaptive option lies under the power management.

Drivers are the latest beta.

Thank You!

well, you can do it that way or in the global profile, which I would recommend if your still having issues, since sometimes profiles don't switch over correctly.

But yes, you got it :)

The 670M is a downclocked GF114 (second generation Fermi, same as the desktop 560), not a Kepler. So it's comparable in performance to the desktop 460, which is entirely adequate for High to most of Ultra. Because it's not a Kepler, there shouldn't be driver issues still being worked out.

Still, you're right; any way the driver can fool itself into thinking it should use the Intel GPU, or back down on the nVidia GPU's settings, is likely to end up making trouble for the game.

This laptop is a member of the ROG (Republic of Gamers) series, specifically designed for gaming, i have a G73Jh, an older one, with a 5870m, and i play TW2 comfortably on high, at about 77 C on GPU. The op's laptop can play this game at ultra i'm sure, but of course with those settings mentioned above turned off.
