Performance problems with GTX 660

Will repost my reddit post here. Hope for some more tips to get here. Thanks in advance.

I hope someone here can help to solve my low performance problems.

I've already tried every suggested tip I've found out there to raise my fps. Currently I'm struggling with max 18 fps on 1024x768 and everything on low settings.

My rig:
Intel Core i7-4770 3.40GHz
GeForce GTX 660
12 GB RAM
Windows 8.1
no SSD, only HDD...

What I've already tried:

- Reinstalled nvidia driver 347.88 (according to some rumors, the newest drivers cut the 600 card generation performance)
- Set all driver system options to performance
- set Witcher 3 to high priority (task manager)
- modify OS energy plan settings

According to some gaming magazines, the GTX 660 should be able to run 1920x1080 with everything on low with 40+ fps.

So now I'm here, desperate...
Maybe you guys have an advice for nvidia graphic settings? Or what the bottleneck can be?
Anyone here with a GTX 660 running the game with 30+ FPS?

A glimmer of hope -- ini Tweaking.
I'm not a specialist, but after lowering some of the numbers in the user.ini I reached max 24 FPS on 1024x768.

Is there any good guide out there? Or any specialist who could help me out here?

Thanks in advance and best regards,
pook

Hi! Sorry for my brilliant English. You have mighty Core i7. Try to switch PhisX configuration to CPU in NVIDIA Control Panel

I have an old gen GPU just as you.My rig:intel i7 3820 @ 3.7ghz32gb ddr3 ram @ 1600 mhzGTX 680 4gb VRam.I have the game at 1080p and have all graphics settings on high/ultra except for foliage distance (medium). Also have all the good stuff on postprocessing.I set the game locked at 30 FPS with Vsync and is 100% stable and stays at 30 fps no matter what.I noticed the game used at most 1400mb of VRAM and 6-7gb of RAM. So you should be able to run it no prob. Here's what I suggest:Set the foliage distance to either medium or low.Set all graphics settings to minimumDisable anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion.Try switching to fullscreen mode (apparently huge fps increase. I have mine in borderless window though, don't notice any difference).Should be fine at 1080p resolution, no need to turn it down. Also: (VERY IMPORTANT)Go to Nvidia Control panel, go to the witcher 3 settings and under "Power Management Mode" Select "Prefer Maximum Performance"Also make sure you have Nvidia Hairworks disabled.Locking your FPS at 30 should also do the trick.Hope this helps! :D

the difference between a 660 and 680 is ALOT. a 660 should be struggling on this. im sorry but having old hardware and complaining about how poor it performs can only be chalked up to you not having the specs to run it

Hi spike,

Are you just here to gettin your post count up? Probably...

Ok, I'm not complaining about bad performance of the game. I'm complaining about the fact, that I'm not able to reach the same performance as other people with same GPU.

There are several threads where people run GTX 660 with 1920x 1080 with 30-40 FPS.... even gaming magazines are stating that GTX 660 will run at 30+ FPS.
So why the hack I am only able to run it with 12 FPS on 1920x 1080 and 24 FPS on 1024x768...

Best regards,
pook

Thanks for your help 0ulooked,

unfortunately as I stated, I already have everything on LOW and OFF... there is no option I can turn off anymore. As well I have set all parameters in nvidia control panel to performance.

Best regards,
pook

Do you have a desktop 660 or a mobile 660m?

Found that already as well.. unfortunately only quality tips in there.. as I already stated, have everything on low and off (game + nvidia control panel).

Really don't know whats wrong with my rig. I monitored it during gaming. GPU at 100% all the time... CPU + memory seems to be bored

Hi!
I think, problem goes from driver fault:

NVIDIA has just announced that it has discovered a couple of issues that affected Kepler GPUs in The Witcher 3, and is currently working on driver updates to resolve them. This is undoubtedly great news for all owners of such graphics cards, as the performance of CDPR’s RPG was underwhelming on those GPUs.

It remains to be seen whether these optimizations/fixes will be made only for NVIDIA’s Hairworks effects, or for the entire game performance in general.
