I made an account just to post saying I am also devastated by this bug. I definitely killed the bandit leader, definitely looted his corpse, definitely did not have the key to the Claywich merchant's cage. I have done everything else but I need his cards for platinum on ps4. This bug makes me want to burn things.
Quest still broken on ps4. Do you know if i can continu, finish the game and come back here when it fixed ? Or do i have tout stop playing and wait ?

Yep, the same here. PS4 (1.04) Person in Distress in Velen (north) - key missing.
Reloaded a previous save, did it again twice, but not any key found.
Waited for some days (through meditation) some horseman respawning but after killing them, again no key found.
Searched all the loot boxes around, again no key...

Fixing on a future patch would be nice, but nothing game-breaking actually.

So i did it you can get the key from the bandits but you have to be carefull to not let them reset because then they will dissapear and you cant get the key anymore but then there is another problem you can free the merchant in the cage and he tells you that he will meet you at the small camp nearby but when you talk to him and tell him show me your goods or whatever then nothing happens no trade window nothing so you cant buy shit from him

Hmm I had this bug in 3 games so far when none of the bandits even spawn on PC and 2 times the merchant wasn't even in the cage..I will check this in a minute in my new game.

Yeah in 1.03 on PC the bandits were there and I got the key and released the merchant ...fresh instal patched to 1.03 on PC and it worked for me. Well he went to the camp near the crossing but gave no reward for his rescue and there was not dialog about it with him so I guess he is still broken.

1+ I cleared the bandit camp with the merchant early on. I never found a key on any of the bodies so I just continued with my game. Now I'm finding out the guy stuck in the cage sells the last Gwent cards I need to complete my collection. Hope they get to this next patch.

So this happened to me today. Random guy in a cage in Velen, probably the 3rd or 4th I've found, only this time the bandit leader didn't drop a key. I tried reloading several times, no luck. The leader just won't drop a key. I kept the camp uncleared for now, but I hope this gets patched.

Met this bug today, after doing some quests i went north of the Hangman Tree and experienced what everyone here did (thanks for sharing guys): 4 Level 7 Horseman Bandits and no Leader, so no key. In my occasion the merchant was still there (did not disappear) but is stuck into the cage since i cannot find the key. It's very sad since i've done nothing wrong except escape some bandits when i was too low level. It's like 100 meters far from the very first spawn point in Velen. It's impossible to not glitch. Please do not make us restart the game just for this silly thing, i can understand for real choices (or simply to change outcomes), but this is RANDOM! xD
I highly suggest to put the key in the chest in front of the cage, instead that on the leader, if you don't have a better solution. But please fix this thing because i can't manage to go ahead after i've read that the merchant even disappeared at one point for some guys.. so i'm not anymore motivated in going ahead to discover maybe that if the merchant has disappeared then i've lost him forever! Tell us something! Even "despair and die" is accepted! XD
p.s. i'm on PS4

I can free him from the cage but he gives no reward when you meet him at the camp and sells no cards, also every time I enter the area he spawns back in the cage and walks to the camp.

Tried patching to 1.05 on PC to see if this fixed the problem but it didn't and now I have to unistall the game again as 1.04 and 1.05 are full of game breaking bugs like I can;t craft because I already have that item back to 1.03 I again >.<
